BUSINESS UNIT: PRODUCT PIPELINES
Kinder Morgan is the largest independent transporter of petroleum products in North America, transporting approximately 2.4 million barrels per day. The great majority of these products are transported through our Products Pipelines business, which moves gasoline, jet fuel, diesel, natural gas liquids and condensate through about 9,500 miles of pipelines. We also have approximately 65 liquids terminals in this business segment that store fuels and offer blending services for ethanol and biofuels.

Position Description:
Primary Purpose:


  • Field based Laboratory technician for a Crude Oil Condensate Splitter laboratory located in Galena Park, TX. Technician will be responsible for analytical testing of crude oil and distillate petroleum products, report results to Operations and clients, and maintain laboratory safety and integrity per company policy and regulations.

  • Technician will be working a rotating 12hr shift, switching between day and night shifts every two weeks, and be on standby as required.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Analyze samples in accordance with appropriate Standard Operating Procedures and supply data in a timely manner to internal and external customers.

  • Test various petroleum products including but not limited to: Crude oil, Kerosene, Atmospheric Gas Oil, Diesel, and Naphtha.

  • Perform methods and procedures in accordance to in-house SOP and ASTM methods including but not limited to: D5191, D4052, D7536, D86, D7094, D5972, D93, D4007, D4928, D7345 and D56.

  • Perform SQC analysis and ensure any failures are recorded, investigated, and reported to appropriate Supervisor or Manager on site.

  • Maintain laboratory integrity and apply proper housekeeping procedures.

  • Ensure that laboratory equipment is maintained, calibrated and meets required performance expectations.

  • Perform minor checks on instruments and inform Associate Chemist or Supervisor when issues are beyond the scope of the individual.

  • Review and understand results pertaining to the product tested and report any abnormal observations to the appropriate supervisor.

  • Ensure laboratory chemicals and consumable inventory are fully stocked, labeled, and stored in appropriate location per the Safety Data Sheet.

  • Dispose waste and hazardous materials in appropriate containers as determined by the Chemical Hygiene Plan.

  • Work closely with Splitter Operations and Engineering personnel.

  • Communicate in a professional manner with Third Party Inspectors and External Customers.

  • Perform other duties as requested or assigned.

Level of position will be based on education and experience

Position Requirements

Education/Work Experience:


  • 3-5 years in a petroleum analytical laboratory or similar facility experience

  • Associate or Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry or related science field preferred

Experience / Specific Knowledge:

  • Prior experience in a petroleum refinery or petro-chemical facility.

  • Knowledge of instrument trouble-shooting for the maintenance and minor repair of laboratory equipment.

  • Satisfactory driving record as determined by the Company, and maintain insurability by company carrier.

Certifications, Licenses, Registrations:
  • Valid motor vehicle operator's license.
Competencies, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to pass and maintain all applicable testing/certification requirements.

  • Self-motivated and capable of working with minimal supervision in a 24/7 laboratory operation.

  • Read and understand written material (in English) and perform mathematical calculations.

  • Clearly communicate orally (face to face and by telephone) and in writing in English.

  • Must be flexible and able to work effectively in a dynamic environment and consistently maintain a professional demeanor with clients, customers and representatives of various local, state and federal agencies.

  • Successful completion of drug screen and background check upon job offer.

Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time.

  • Visual acuity to distinguish colors, perform various laboratory tests when needed, and prepare analytical documentation and written communications.

  • Exposure to odors and fumes associated with petroleum products.

  • Ability to perform physical labor primarily in an indoor environment, but also occasionally outside including walking, bending, stooping, climbing tank stairs, ladders and platforms, lifting minimum 50 lbs. and general manual labor.

Working Conditions:

  • Indoor laboratory and office environment.

  • Field environment - petroleum terminal facility with refining, pipeline, tank storage, and truck related activities.

  • Possible outdoor activities including manual labor in all weather conditions.
