EHS Inspector - Permit Writer at Kinder Morgan, Inc. in GALENA PARK, Texas

Position Description

The EHS Inspector role is responsible for ensuring Kinder Morgan's EHS policies and procedures are effectively implemented in the field. The successful candidate will contribute to the region's Drive to Zero through providing a strong, positive field presence that represents a visible example of the SQE culture that Kinder Morgan strives to achieve. This position reports to the Health & Safety Manager for the Gulf Liquids Region.


  • Effectively work with Health & Safety Field Leads to ensure that safety work practices and work permits are compliant with both OSHA and Kinder Morgan requirements,

  • Issue and audit safe work permits,

  • Work with environmental group to perform regulatory inspections both on and off site,

  • Communicate to the Health & Safety Manager all known/discovered non-compliance or inefficiencies in Kinder Morgan's Health & Safety practices,

  • Participate in EHS audits and assessments with Kinder Morgan Corporate auditors and government agency inspections,

  • Conduct routine self-assessments of EHS field training programs,

  • Create and conduct periodic contractor safety training,

  • Respond to site injuries and work with EMT to provide first aid and/or patient packaging to medical center for further evaluation,

  • Effectively communicate changes to site procedures and policies to impacted parties,

  • Train new teammates on the Kinder Morgan policies and procedures and ensure all local regulation requirements are met,

  • Complete regulatory compliance, training, and other actions on-time with appropriate closure status.

  • Must be able to complete tasks both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather conditions,

  • Willingness to serve on the Emergency Response Team (ERT),

  • Must be able to respond to all fire, rescue, HAZMAT, and medical emergencies

  • Demonstrate behavior consistent with Kinder Morgan Safety, Quality, and Environmental (SQE) Program,

  • Ensure KM's Fire Protection Systems are inspected, maintained, and in good working condition.

  • Other duties as assigned by the Health & Safety Manager.


Position Requirements

Education: High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience: Two or more years of experience in occupational health and safety in a chemical or terminal setting.

Certifications, Licenses, Regulations:


  • Maintain a driving history satisfactory with Kinder Morgan standards, and its insurer,

  • Must have a current, valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), or be able to secure one prior to start of assignment.

Competencies, skills, abilities:

  • Knowledge of OSHA rules and regulations as delineated through 29 CFR 1910 and 29 CFR 1926 standards,

  • Working understanding of NFPA standard as related to requirements/training of Emergency Response Team (ERT) and Emergency Operation Center (EOC) team members,

  • Willingness to serve on the Emergency Response Team (ERT) and maintain confined space/high angle rescue training and proficiency.

  • Must be able to successfully and simultaneously manage multiple tasks, often under short or changing deadlines, in a diverse and fast paced environment,

  • Strong oral and written communication skills,

  • Adaptable to organizational change.

Physical Demands:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the successful candidate must be able to stand, walk, sit, ascend/descend stairs, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk and/or hear,

  • Must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds,

  • Must be able to complete tasks both indoors and outdoors in all types of weather conditions.

Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to work rotating shift schedules in a terminal that operates 24 hours per day, 7 days per week to provide coverage while work permits are active,

  • Required to carry a company-provided cell phone, and be available to respond during working and non-working hours, and share in on-call duties rotation.

Preferred education, experience, certifications, competencies, skills, abilities:

  • Technical training and/or a college degree is a plus,

  • Professional certifications (examples include OHST, CHST, STS, STSC, etc.),

  • Completion of OSHA 30-hour general industry or construction industry course,

  • Ability to obtain and maintain commercial driver's license (CDL) for operation of Kinder Morgan fire truck,

  • CPR and first aid certified, or willing to complete with 90 days of hire.
