Gallery Attendant at Fleet Science Center in San Diego, California

Job Description:

General Statement:

The Gallery Attendant supports the Fleet Science Center’s Mission by presenting Fleet guests and visitors with fun and innovative educational experiences related to our Ball Pool and upcoming Pause Play exhibit. This is a temporary position, currently expected to go through April or May of 2025.

Reports to: Gallery Experience Supervisor

Primary Duties and Responsibilities, including mental requirements of position:

General Duties:

1. Implement safety protocols and ensure that guests interact with specific gallery experiences in a safe and orderly manner.


2. Maintain functionality and organization of gallery space and relevant interactive exhibit pieces.


3. Model best practices of informal guest experiences appropriate to the Fleet.


4. Conduct innovative educational demonstrations designed for public audiences ensuring these experiences are responsive to all guests and their needs thus enabling their effective and safe participation.


5. Provide demonstrations or facilitation for special events and weekend programs, as necessary.


6. Manage weekly cleanings of specific experiences within our gallery space.


7. Restock materials, equipment and tools as needed.


8. Assist in the installation and deinstallation of exhibitions as needed.


9. Work flexible schedule to include weekends, holidays, and occasional evening shifts.

Tools and equipment used to perform this position: Personal computer using Microsoft software, telephone.

Supervision, direction, or guidance provided for this position: Performs duties with limited supervision. Supervision required to review priorities.

Physical Requirements of this Position:

Medium Work: Position involves the ability to frequently exert up to 20 pounds of force and occasionally exert up to 50 pounds of force to move objects.

Experience, education, or skills required of the incumbent in this position:

• Strong verbal communication skills with an emphasis on public speaking and presenting information to diverse audiences in an understanding and compelling fashion. Background in acting, public speaking or teaching a plus.


• Strong desire to interact with children and the general public in informal educational settings.


• Some education in one or more science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) disciplines preferred.


• Previous customer service experience and an ability to provide a high level visitor experience.


• Ability to work independently as well as within a diverse team environment.


• Ability to organize time effectively and manage multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.


• Ability to work in front of a live audience, standing and/or walking for an entire shift.


• Ability to work flexible evening, holiday, and weekend schedule.
