Taiho Oncology, being a lean enterprise, presents an opportunity to participate in multiple facets of pharmaceutical market research and competitive intelligence to help influence the development of strategy and tactics to support both marketed and pipeline oncology products.  Unlike larger pharmaceuticals, the Associate Director will be involved with and have exposure to senior Commercial leadership. Projects will have an impact on the business’ decision making and products’ revenue.

Position Summary:

With minimal oversight, this position will have primary market research and competitive intelligence (CI) function responsibility for Taiho’s in-line and pipeline products in the United States, Canada, and Europe.  This includes identification of market research and competitive intelligence needs, and the development, execution, interpretation and communication of market research and competitive intelligence insights.  The candidate will also be the commercial point person for management of secondary information resources.

Performance Objectives:


  • Develop and execute market research and CI initiatives that are innovative, insightful, targeted, and cost-effective to support the effective creation and execution of business strategies at the various stages in the products’ lifecycle.  Participate as an integral member of product teams for in-line and/or pipeline insights.

  • Collaborate closely with marketing, sales, market access, patient advocacy, business development, New Product Planning, and medical affairs to ensure information needs are identified and addressed. 

  • Manage CI landscape monitoring by acting as the liaison between the commercial organization and the CI vendor in order to establish priorities and develop key intelligence questions.  Provide timely communication and alerts to internal stakeholders.

  • Work with Director, Business Insights & Analytics to integrate information and triangulate findings from multiple sources (MR, CI, Data) to assess the potential brand implications.  Ability to use this information to support forecasting, scenario planning, and strategic decision making. 

  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders (e.g. Medical Affairs, Brand Teams) and the CI vendor prior to, during and after major oncology conferences to plan for comprehensive coverage and communication of critical events. 

  • Support business development and in-licensing evaluations and information requests on an ad-hoc basis.  Act as the go-to person to identify appropriate and cost-effective resources to meet internal information needs and assess the value to the company.

  • Effectively manage all third-party secondary information resources and databases within budget, including evaluation and selection of appropriate resources, contracting, communication and user training.  Collaborate with peers at Taiho Oncology, Inc. (US), Taiho Canada, Taiho Oncology Europe, and Taiho Pharma Company (Japan) to share information resources as appropriate.

  • Maintain market research, CI, and secondary reports within the commercial shared drive.

Education/Certification Requirements:


  • BS/BA or equivalent in business, social science, communications, math, or science.

  • MBA preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:


  • 7+ years of marketing research and/or competitive intelligence experience. 

  • Forecasting experience, and willingness to take on some forecasting responsibilities in the future, a plus.  Material experience managing external vendors and maintaining strong working relationships.

  • Enjoy working in multi-functional teams.

  • Oncology therapeutic experience preferred.

  • Knowledge of secondary resources and competitive intelligence research methods, particularly within oncology.

  • Keen understanding and experience leading both primary and secondary CI initiatives.

  • Knowledge of and familiarity with a full range of marketing research methods for healthcare providers and ability to manage and execute research projects.  

  • Experience with and understanding of secondary information sources (i.e., pipeline and clinical trial databases, syndicated reports, oncology and business publications). 

  • Knowledge of U.S. health care market, including commercial, regulatory & clinical development

  • Ability to communicate key insights in clear, concise fashion to multi-function team members.

  • Highly detail and quality oriented.

  • Align efforts, understand, and implement prioritization of deliverables.

  • A positive attitude, flexibility and a proactive thought process.

  • Ability to work independently.

  • Synthesizes disparate data sources to create unique business insights.

  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret scientific and technical information and data.

  • Excellent English communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Experience with design and analysis, secondary data.

  • Ability to learn and integrate complex information, and communicate key insights in clear, concise fashion to team members.

  • Capability to assess new, unfamiliar situations, analyze options and determine appropriate course of action.

  • Excellent Excel, PowerPoint, and Word software skills.

The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $175,950 - $207,000 annually; however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as PTO, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. 

If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
