Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Automation Engineer specializing in Industrial Controls and Process Automation. As an Automation Engineer, you will play a crucial role in the design, installation, and troubleshooting of industrial control systems and automation equipment. Your expertise will ensure the efficient operation of manufacturing processes, enhance productivity, and contribute to the overall success of our organization.

Primary Accountabilities:

Design and Development:


  • Collaborate with plant leadership to develop and implement industrial control systems and automation solutions for manufacturing processes.
  • Lead the design and modification of control panels, instrumentation, and electrical circuits.
  • Conduct feasibility studies and provide technical input for new projects.

Installation and Configuration:

  • Install, configure, and calibrate programmable logic controllers (PLCs), human-machine interfaces (HMIs), variable frequency drives (VFDs), and other industrial automation equipment.
  • Perform wiring and electrical connections according to established electrical codes and standards.
  • Conduct functional testing and troubleshoot issues related to control systems and automation equipment during installation and commissioning.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Maintain accurate records of system modifications, repairs, and maintenance activities.
  • Prepare technical reports, documentation, and diagrams to facilitate effective communication and knowledge sharing within the team.
  • Contribute to the development and updating of standard operating procedures (SOPs) related to control systems and automation.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Adhere to safety guidelines and regulations while working with electrical systems and industrial equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, codes, and regulations pertaining to industrial control systems and automation.
  • Maintain and train employees in the safe and efficient methods to repair equipment by following company developed LOTO and other related programs.

Secondary Accountabilities:

Maintenance and Repair (at Maintenance Request):

  • Perform inspections and ad-hoc maintenance activities at the request of the Maintenance Team to ensure the smooth operation of industrial control systems.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical, electronic, and mechanical faults in control systems and automation equipment.
  • Carry out repairs, component replacements, and software updates to rectify malfunctions and optimize system performance.

In addition to the accountabilities listed above, individuals may perform other duties as assigned, including work in other functional areas to cover absences or relief, to equalize peak work periods or otherwise to balance the workload.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

Education / Experience (an equivalent combination of education and experience required to successfully complete the primary accountabilities is indicated below)


  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Industrial Automation, or a related field.
  • 5 years

Competencies / Technical Skills

  • Proven experience as an Automation Engineer or similar role, with a focus on industrial control systems and automation.
  • One of the following or combination desired. Certified Welder, Journeyman Electrician, or Certified Maintenance Professional or other applicable certified field desired.
  • Strong knowledge of industrial automation technologies, including PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, sensors, and instrumentation.
  • Proficiency in reading and writing electrical schematics, ladder logic diagrams, and technical specifications.
  • Hands-on experience with control panel assembly, wiring, and electrical troubleshooting.
  • Proficiency with programming languages used in industrial automation, such as ladder logic or structured text.
  • Solid understanding of industrial communication protocols, such as Modbus, Profibus, or Ethernet/IP.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to diagnose and resolve technical issues effectively.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Knowledge of safety standards and regulations related to industrial control systems and automation.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations. Ability to read blue prints and electrical schematics.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Bilingual preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Able to lift 50 lbs.

  • Able to stand for prolonged periods of time
  • Able to walk long distances
  • Able to work at elevated heights

Work Environment:

  • Able to work long hours in hot conditions during spring and summer.
  • Able to work in cold conditions during fall and winter.
