Technical Focus: Social impact focus to achieve a just transition

In order to meet the 1.5-degree target laid out in the Paris Accords, a speedy Net Zero transition both ethically and practically requires a focus on ensuring that ALL workers, communities, and populations are part of a just transition. In the words of the Institute for Human Rights and Business, the concept of "just transition" encompasses both public policies and business action to deal with the impacts of industry transition away from greenhouse gas emissions for jobs and livelihoods (the transition 'out'), as well as measures to generate the low or zero greenhouse gas emission jobs and livelihoods of a sustainable society (the transition 'in').

Our Global Sustainability Partner - Social Value role is pivotal in driving this transition forward, blending entrepreneurial spirit with deep-seated commitment to social and environmental justice. The Global Sustainability Social Value Partner - will act as an accelerator within the Arcadis business, collaborating with Global Business Areas (GBAs) to help them deliver known and emerging solutions that contribute to an equal and equitable future.

Successful candidates for the Social Value Partner role will have in-depth sector technical knowledge and demonstrated experience in:


  • Developing industry partnerships that drive a just transition approach that scales beyond the typical project boundaries;
  • Authoring strategic or technical input and reviewing content from others relating to social impact strategies;
  • Communicating the latest external social value research and thought leadership;
  • Understanding the emerging measurement and design approaches that can be deployed and scaled up across projects;
  • Cultivating a broad view of global policies that are emerging or already in place, a view of the up-in-coming transition approaches, and awareness of expert knowledge of the various guidance and measurement frameworks,

Sustainability Partner Role: To be Arcadis' lead expert on the given sustainability subject matter expertise, and position Arcadis as a leader in this field. (Five areas of Sustainability subject matter expertise are; GHG and Energy, Water Stewardship, Circular Economy, Nature & Biodiversity, and Environmental Justice). You should be an expert and practitioner in the field, regularly engaging with and/or contributing to what the state-of-the-art thinking is, and what practical solutions/approaches are being developed in science, academia, non-profits and/or other relevant leading institutions. About 50% of your time should be focused on Arcadis - building a bridge backward from the ''state of the art'' to incorporation into every Solution/Service Arcadis has, supporting global communities of practice around this subject area, and furthering the company's position in terms of thought leadership. You should embed this expertise into Arcadis' project solutions, as well as collaborate with the Business Partnering team to devise how we will measure/track any impact in this area in our solutions and services. About 50% of your time will be focused on supporting Arcadis' client outreach as requested by the Growth team - embedding your subject matter expertise into any strategic pursuits and key client engagements in a way that is replicable and scalable. This role will be responsible for: • Developing in-house partnerships: Collaborating with key stakeholders to identify and develop our strategic value chain partners to drive new equal and equitable solutions to our clients. • Co-creating solutions: partnering with our Global Business Areas by taking new research and development to identify and scale new opportunities and solutions that maximize opportunities for a Just Transition to net zero • Project indicator measurement: partnering with our Impact & Systems team to develop the methodology, tools and systems to measure equity + human rights impacts in our projects • Standardization: work with our Global Solutions & Services team to embed equity orientation + human rights practices in our standard operating procedures • Supporting our client, pursuit, and project teams to win and deliver strategic projects globally, maximizing equity-enhancing opportunities in our proposals and projects • Campaign & thought leadership: developing Social Value-related thought leadership content to feed into campaigns and external presentations

Role accountabilities:

Standardize Sustainability in All Solutions and Services


  • You will be responsible as the subject matter expert in holistically integrating all solutions and services; you will develop in-house partnerships and collaborate with key stakeholders to identify and develop our strategic value chain partners to drive a net-zero transition to our clients. Through campaigns and thought leadership, you will develop social-related thought leadership content to feed into campaigns and external presentations; you will engage with internal/external experts in order to develop KPIs, processes, and systems to enable the measurement of social impact in projects.

Maximize Sustainability Opportunities in Strategic Pursuits Across All Solutions and Services

  • Your role will partner with the growth team in proactive client identification and engagement in your area of expertise, utilizing hotspot analysis from the sustainability impact and systems team. You will support the growth team with strategic pursuits and key client project delivery and support Global Solutions and Services Directors as necessary to develop better proposals and to participate in client discussions. Your role will support clients, pursuits, and project teams to win and deliver strategic projects globally, maximizing equity-enhancing opportunities in our proposals and projects.

Engage in Communities of Practice

  • You will work with the global business areas (GBAs) to grow global communities of practice, by building upon existing local groups and leveraging in-country GBA capability and expertise. You will develop content for sustainability training and awareness programs working in partnership with the Education & Engagement team and work with the Impact & systems team to develop methodology, tools, and systems to measure social impact

Thought Leadership

  • Lead and support thought leadership pieces and campaigns • Primary technical connection to WBCSD for relevant topics • Collect and amplify best cases• Coordinate with Global Service & Solution Director

Qualifications & Experience:

Required Qualification:


  • Degree-qualified in a relevant discipline
  • Experience building sustainability business cases and keeping up to date with global market trends around innovation and how these translate and imbed into a global organization
  • Engage with senior stakeholders, influence, train, and empower business leaders around Social Impact.
  • Demonstrate being a subject matter expert (SME) in Sustainability Social Impact, showing global best practices and understanding of emerging trends and developments around governance and legislation.
  • Strong influencing ability to train colleagues, empower colleagues, enable clients, and accelerate the transition to a sustainable world

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A master's qualification is preferred but not essential
  • Fluency with public speaking and experience presenting at conferences • Prior participation in industry groups, network organizations, or others to drive advocacy efforts.
