Ashland has an exciting opportunity for an EHS Manager to join our Ashland LLC, Specialty ingredients G.P. business at our Hopewell, VA facility. This is a very visible, significant role within the Company and the EHS function. This position will report to Site Manager.

The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:


  • Possesses a thorough knowledge of and ability to effectively utilize methods and tools to conduct risk assessments and process hazard analysis.

  • Demonstrates knowledge and a thorough understanding of EHS regulatory structure and requirements, EHS management systems and company requirements.

  • Able to lead, implement and measure plant specific, company, and/or regulatory EHS program elements.

  • Exhibits ability to conduct root cause analyses, identify corrective actions, and utilize incident management systems to improve site and employee safety

  • Demonstrates skill in project management tools and methods to successfully manage and implement several projects and initiatives simultaneously.

  • Possesses thorough knowledge of adult learning methods and able to identify, develop and facilitate EHS related training materials and topics.

  • Clearly and effectively communicates verbal and written messages appropriate to the audience. Able to deliver information in a formalized and/or group setting.  Able to translate complicated and/or technical information into a simplified format that can be easily understood by all levels of the organization.

  • Holds working knowledge of current software systems, i.e. SAP, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint). Skilled in utilizing database software programs and electronic project management tools.


  • Has ability to persuade or convince others not within the normal reporting relationship to support an idea, agenda, direction or initiative by establishing credibility, using data and/or exercising other appropriate methods

  • Adheres to and practices an appropriate and effective set of core values and beliefs during both good and bad times, acts in line with those values, rewards the right values and disapproves of others.  Consistently demonstrates and is regarded as having high integrity and trust among peers, managers and employees, is widely trusted and seen as a direct, truthful individual, keeps confidences and admits mistakes, doesn't misrepresent him/herself for personal gain.

In order to be qualified for this role, you must possess the following:


  • Bachelor of Science or comparable degree in Industrial Safety, Environmental Science or other related technical degree (i.e., Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, etc.) or equivalent years of experience.

  • A minimum of ten years of industrial safety and regulatory experience in a manufacturing setting of which five years must be in the oil or chemical industry.

  • A minimum of five years of supervisory experience

  • A minimum of five years working at a PSM facility

  • Experience working with regulatory agencies

  • Ability to work with individuals and teams to lead EHS initiatives

  • Detail Oriented and able to prioritize work

The following skill sets are preferred by the business unit:


  • Fifteen years of industrial experience in a manufacturing setting

  • CSP certification is preferred, if not otherwise required by region or country regulations.

  • Emergency response experience
