Mattapan Food and Fitness Coalition (MFFC) (mattapanfoodandfit.org)grew out of an effort to draw on the wonderful ethnic and cultural diversity of the Mattapan community to promote a healthy living environment, with a focus on access to healthy foods and the promotion of physical fitness for all ages. Positive changes in these areas complement other efforts to decrease health problems like diabetes, heart disease, obesity and other health conditions that plague our community.

Boston REACH

Boston REACH is a 5-year grant from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Boston Public Health Commission with aims to improve health, prevent chronic diseases, and reduce health inequities among racial and ethnic populations with the highest risk, or burden, of chronic disease through implementation of evidence-based policy, systems and environmental (PSE) change strategies. Boston REACH has four specific work plans that this position will support: increasing access to healthy food, increasing opportunities for active transportation, supporting healthy early education and care, and increasing adult vaccination rates.



Responsibilities

The MFFC Program Manager, a grant funded position, will lead and support grant-funded projects on behalf of the organization. Current projects include Boston REACH, general community engagement, and strengthening our built environment (transportation and open space). MFFC defines built environment activities as anything that utilizes green spaces (parks, forest, gardens) and blue space (rivers) to foster healthy eating and active living. This position will play a key role in fostering meaningful connections between our organization and its community members, developing and implementing strategies to engage, inform, and build relationships with diverse stakeholders. The ideal person is one who has an interest in open space, transportation, environment and the many intersections that come with it. The ideal person is also one who is a creative thinker with excellent communication skills and has a deep understanding of community dynamics. Duties and projects will change over time.

Essential Functions

Program Management

  • Manage, support, and/or supervise activities of a program or project. May coordinate multiple projects and initiatives including activities supporting implementation of grants, community building and education, and achievement of program goals.
    • Lead the strategic direction and growth of programs with support from MFFC staff and Advisory Board
    • Be the main point of contact for the organization on related programs
    • Manage all financial aspects of the programs including creating program budgets, invoicing, etc.
    • Prepare reports for stakeholders; leads or assists with data collection and evaluation activities; reviews and analyzes information and data concerning MFFC programs, to determine effectiveness.
    • Create on your own or work with Marketing + Communications Manager or Intern to promote program related work
    • Other suites as assigned related to program management

Community Engagement

  • Develop a community engagement strategy that allows residents to meaningfully give input into the programs managed and into the organization in general
  • Develop and implement outreach strategies to connect with various community groups, organizations, and individuals such as tabling, on the ground connecting, leading membership committee meetings, etc.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships and partnerships with key community stakeholders and community-based organizations, including local leaders, businesses, and influencers.
  • Support, coordinate and/or organize existing and new community events and activities to encourage participation and interaction around programs.
  • Represent MFFC at transportation, environment, and other program areas at related meetings, councils, coalition, boards, etc and community voice at the city, state, and national level where appropriate.
  • Create innovative resident informed opportunities where residents can be involved in the built environment happenings in the City of Boston

Administrative

  • Meet weekly with the executive director or as needed
  • Attend MFFC meetings, local events, meetings, and gatherings to establish a presence within the community
  • Collaborate with MFFC staff and core partners where appropriate
  • Support fundraising efforts such as grant writing and any other internal efforts that may arise
  • Lead in the facilitation and coordination of MFFC related community meetings

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated cultural competence with diverse ethnic, cultural and socio-economic groups and understanding of the role social determinants, including racism, play in its impact on health outcomes
  • Proven experience in program management, meeting facilitation, community engagement, public speaking, outreach, or related roles in a community similar to Mattapan
  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field (communications, community engagement, public health, etc.) or 2+ years equivalent work experience.
  • Self-starter, able to take initiative, strong attention to detail
  • Interest in built environment: open space, environment, and transportation
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build and maintain relationships
  • Familiarity with social media platforms, Microsoft Office, and Google Workspace
  • Creative and strategic thinking to develop innovative engagement initiatives and solve challenges
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Passion for community building and a genuine interest in understanding diverse perspectives
  • Able to get around the city of Boston via walking, rolling, public transportation, or car
  • Bi-lingual in Haitian Creole a plus
  • Able to work evenings and some weekends as needed
  • Comfortable working in a virtual environment

Compensation and Benefits

Location: Work will be primarily performed Hybrid - Mattapan Food and Fitness Coalition, 1613 Blue Hill Ave, Suite 307, Mattapan, MA 02126.

Compensation: The salary range for this position is $50,700 - $58,500/yr. and is commensurate with experience.

Schedule: Temporary Full-time with an expected end date of 9/30/2028, 37.5 hours/week, to meet the needs of residents weekdays, some evenings, and some Saturdays (seasonal) are required.
