Position Summary

The Director of Student Media provides leadership and oversight for all areas of student media, including print, radio, and video formats. The Director serves as the General Manager of KTRU, and supervises the Chief Operator of KTRU (Rice radio), an office assistant, assistant director, publication interns, and student assistants. Additionally, the Director serves as the primary advisor and, has oversight for student print media, and provides general support in other areas in the Division of the Dean of Undergraduates.

The expected hiring range is between $72,600 and $77,128 annually, contingent upon qualifications and experience.

Requirements


  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 5+ years of experience in advising student media, preferably in a university setting (including print and online media experience) or relevant journalism experience outside university settings
  • Knowledge of media and copyright law
  • Experience managing budgets and finances
  • Extensive experience using design software, including the Adobe suite
  • Skills

    • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team in addition to collaborating with external groups across campus
    • Strong verbal and written communication
    • Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks, plan and execute workflows, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
    • Demonstrable experience conceiving, developing, and implementing a diverse range of public art/media programming
    • Skill in organizing and presenting information and facts to educational groups on art/media subjects
    • Knowledge and understanding of museum ethics and principles
    • Strong visual literacy and critical thinking skills
    • Ability to foster relationships with donors, foundations, and the art/media community to strengthen fundraising efforts
    • Ability to mentor others, in particular advising high-level student leaders in 1-1 setting
    • Strong research and analytical ability
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
    • Excellent reporting, conceptual editing, copy editing, and substantive editing skills
    • Proven ability to oversee leadership and training events and programs, and to instruct students in program planning and risk management



Essential Functions

  • Oversees and advises leaders in the production of student newspaper and yearbook as well as the operation of FCC-licensed 501(c)3 non-profit radio station as well as the production of additional student media publications, including the First Look Book and the student media website
  • Supports department and area mission, vision, and goals by managing program areas related to all advisement of programs, budgets, risk management, logistics, marketing, leadership development, and financial responsibility
  • Advises and guides student leaders in the planning and implementation of program and event logistics, including risk management, as well as coordinating leadership development programming
  • Coordinates logistical aspects of projects, ensuring timelines and resources are managed efficiently
  • Communicate with artists discussing the conceptualization of an exhibition, or coordinating the execution of a specific art or publication project
  • Research artists and artworks of multimedia functions, including audio, considering historical and cultural contexts
  • Ensure that all creative produced meets all brief requirements
  • Identify and implement other efficiencies to improve internal creative processes
  • Develops and coordinates arts/media events
  • Create opportunities for arts/media engagement with students
  • Ensure quality control over all projects being released and publicized to external stakeholders
  • Maintain productive relationships with agents, managers, co-promoters, and peer venues
  • Develops and enforces operating policies and procedures for the area and documents and assesses area functions on a regular basis


Additional Functions

  • Supervises area staff (Chief Operator of KTRU Rice Radio, assistant director, and office assistant), sets goals and provides performance feedback and professional development
  • Oversees editors and affiliated student organizations, as well as the summer publications intern
  • Develops, plans, and implements programming and outreach for student leaders and the campus community
  • Serves as financial adviser to student media organizations and oversees and/or provides training for students in finance-related positions within each organization, as well as serving as a voting member on the student government finance committee
  • Supervises business operations, which include, but are not limited to, examining contracts, developing marketing plans to increase advertising revenue, arranging training- related travel, and conducting regular financial audits
  • Supervises computer and camera-related inventory for these organizations, provides technical support, and makes purchases and upgrades as needed
  • Serves as a resource for students interested in media-related education and careers


Preferences

  • At least one year of university experience on a student affairs staff or in a related capacity
  • Extensive experience with Adobe Suite is preferred
  • Experience with broadcast media, news production, video production, and radio
  • Experience in student activities and/or leadership development
