Position Summary

The Storekeeper I performs the issue of materials, receipt, unloading, stocking, pickup, delivery, and other related tasks required to provide materials and services support to Rice Facilities department personnel and other Rice community members. This position performs additional tasks as directed by the Manager which includes, but is not limited to maintaining departmental records required to track various shop activities.

The ideal candidate has maintenance materials purchasing knowledge, exceptional customer service mindset, problem-solving abilities, and the ability to perform job-related administrative tasks with a high level of detail and accuracy.

This position is full-time, benefits-eligible, and starts at $15.00 an hour depending on qualifications and experience.

Requirements


  • HS Diploma or equivalent

  • 1 year or more of experience in inventory management

    • In lieu of the experience requirement, additional related education, above and beyond what is required, on an equivalent year-for-year basis may be substituted

  • Skills

    • Knowledge of supplies, equipment, and/or ordering services and inventory control
    • Ability to reconcile stock counts to report data
    • Database management skills
    • Ability to analyze and solve problems
    • Ability to prepare routine administrative paperwork
    • Ability to receive, stock, and/or deliver goods
    • Clerical, word processing, and/or office skills
    • Knowledge of university invoicing procedures



Preferences

  • Have knowledge of maintenance materials purchasing.
  • Be able to operate mobile equipment and material handling equipment such as vans, pickup trucks, golf carts, forklifts, pallet jacks, and general shop tools


Essential Functions

  • Monitors and maintains current inventory levels; processes purchasing orders as required; tracks orders and investigates problems
  • Records purchases, maintains a database, performs a physical count of inventory, and reconciles actual stock count to computer-generated reports
  • Receives, unpacks, and delivers goods; re-stocks items as necessary; label shelves
  • Processes and documents returned items as required following established procedures
  • Performs routine clerical duties, including data entry, answering telephones, and assisting customers
  • Performs all other duties as assigned


Physical Demands

  • Be able to lift and transport items weighing 50 lbs. or less from one location to another
  • Be able to climb/dismount steps, step stools, ladders, and delivery truck racks
  • Be able to place and remove various-sized items from different levels of 8-10ft storage bins
  • Be able to stand and/or walk for extended periods, for up to eight hours a day


Work Environment

  • Be able to perform in a warehouse work environment with adequate lighting and temperature controls
  • Exposure to hazardous chemicals and materials is limited to the receipt and issue of such items
  • Be available for customer and department demand which may require work to be performed during break periods (for example, winter recess) beyond normally scheduled work hours, typically a few times a year.
  • Be able to perform in a work environment that may be stressful due to multi-level task management, rush or large order requests, numerous customer requests, or having to operate vehicles in Houston traffic conditions


Essential Personnel

This position is considered essential during a campus emergency. The incumbent in this position is expected to report to campus, provide the essential services designated, and work under the overall direction of the Crisis Management Team for the duration of a campus emergency.
