As a member of the Medtronic Diabetes - Continuous Glucose Monitoring Sensor R&D team, this Senior Principal Biomedical Engineer will lead the ideation, design, and development of Medtronic's next generation biosensors with core competency in data science and signals integration. The Senior Principal Biomedical Engineer will be involved in all phases of product development, as a member of the Sensor R&D team. This person will be responsible for understanding, analyzing and modeling data for the development of device design. This work will incorporate insights from real-world customer data for biosensor in-vivo performance optimization. They will work independently to plan experiments, execute, analyze data and generate documentation to assist in driving development efforts. The individual will interface with other engineering, regulatory, quality, clinical and marketing teams over the evolution of associated programs.

This individual will be expected to lead high impact projects in sensor development to progress sensor design and deliver on program milestones.

A Day in the Life

The Senior Principal Biomedical Engineer will provide technical leadership through competencies in biosensing, data science for medical device and modeling. The focus will be on characterization of input to output relationships of biosensor design, manufacturing processes and signals as well as the application of models for design and process development. This individual will conduct rigorous experimentation, data processing and modeling to characterize systems. There will be strong emphasis on data analysis best practices, statistical and mathematical modeling methodologies, Design for Reliability and Manufacturability (DRM) principles and application rigor. This individual will conduct experimentation, analysis, simulation and propose novel test methods to confirm outcomes of simulations.

This person will provide updates to senior leadership with recommendations and decisions on path forward to drive program milestones. Must have the ability to translate the technology into business impact that aligns with product portfolio strategy.

Specific Responsibilities include:


  • Provide technical and programmatic leadership in biosensor design with core competencies in glucose sensor design and development with focus on biosensor signals, data management and statistical modeling.
  • Analysis and understanding of sensing modalities, processes, and system integration.
  • Apply data management best practices for building data pipelines and collaboration.
  • Apply & instill Best-Known-Methods for statistical and mathematical modeling of sensor systems.
  • Apply and interpret characterization models to establish optimal feature set points with respect to sensor in-vivo performance.
  • Assess sensor signal interactions to develop novel test methods that translate into in-vivo prediction.
  • Develop in-vitro to in-vivo test methods.
  • Provide guidance to development programs through the application of analysis and model insights and outcomes.
  • Project management, technical strategy and collaborating with peers to advance early phase technology initiatives into the PDP.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

Bachelors of Science in Biomedical Engineering, Engineering or related sciences and 10+ years of R&D, product development or Engineering experience

OR

Advanced Degree in Science in Biomedical Engineering, Engineering or related sciences and 8+ years of R&D, product development or Engineering experience

Nice to Have


  • 10+ years sensor development experience in Medical Device Industry
  • Demonstrated knowledge of biosensing fundamentals and signals
  • Expert and proven experience in the following:

    • Statistical analysis of data (i.e., Minitab, JMP, Matlab, etc.)
    • Expert in developing statistical and mathematical models
    • Advanced statistical analysis techniques (regression, factor, cluster, etc.)
    • Signal processing, interpretation, and analysis of biosensing signals
    • Databases and building data pipelines
    • Data visualization
  • Highly proficient in MATLAB and/or Python
  • Experience with machine learning
  • Experience applying model simulation for solution optimization
  • Exposure to end user (i.e., patient) real world data to generate insights and inform future development
  • Knowledge about in-vitro and in-vivo testing of subcutaneous medical devices
  • Experience with Project Management and relevant tools
  • Knowledge of medical device product development cycle
  • Related experience providing supporting data to governing bodies (FDA, cFDA, PMDA, LNE GMED, etc.)
  • Experience with technical documentation (Ex. laboratory notebooks, publications, engineering reports, specifications, validations, Standard Operating Procedures, test protocols, etc.)

The provided base salary range is used nationally (except in certain CA locations).The rate offered is compliant with federal/local regulations and may vary by experience,certification/education, market conditions, location, etc.
