Role description:

We are currently seeking an Area Lead for the newly created Eastern PA/DE/NJ Area for our Resilience Water Global Business Area (GBA). The Area Lead is a key leadership role in Arcadis' business operations and will be responsible for leading staff and strategy implementation to drive organic growth across Eastern Pennsylvania (East of the Susquehanna River), Delaware, and New Jersey. As the Eastern PA/DE/NJ Area Lead, you will report directly to the Resilience Water Northeast Region Director and will be responsible for coordinating and collaborating with the other Area Leads within the Region as well as all parts of the organization, including Client Account Leads, Project Managers and teams, Practice Directors and Leads, Corporate Services, and staff in other geographies and business units. You will also oversee and participate in people management activities within your Area including hiring, onboarding, staff development, performance management and terminations.

Additional responsibilities include:


  • Collaborating with the Region Director, other Region Area Leads, Practice Leads and business operations stakeholders to develop an integrated Strategy and annual Business Plan for the Eastern PA/DE/NJ Area, and successfully execute that Strategy and Plan to achieve Regional and Area-specific key performance metrics including net revenue, cash collections, profit, bookings, Global Excellence Centers (GEC) engagement, and more.
  • Driving strategic market presence in key growth areas by working in collaboration with the Region Director, Region Area Leads, Practice Directors/Leads, Growth Leads and Client Account Leads to cost effectively pre-position, increase brand visibility, and improve the win capture rate across this Area.
  • Managing all Area-specific overhead spending including training, conference attendance, sponsorships, professional association memberships, professional development, business development, licensing and more; providing detailed justification of desired spending to the Region Director for approval.
  • Managing all Area bookings to meet Plan obligations; updating Oracle Sales Cloud (OSC) regularly to ensure an accurate Area pipeline for national and global reporting.
  • Participating in all Global Pursuit Committee discussions involving opportunities in the New York State Area.
  • Managing Area financial billability (FB) and project engagement; directing workload within the Area using the Workload Planning tool and ensuring that the Workload Planning tool is updated weekly to include all known and expected work obligations.
  • Collaborating with other Area Leads and Practice Leads on workload leveling within the Region and nationwide, including identifying staff for project opportunities and the need for external hiring.
  • Identifying hiring needs within the Area; collaborating with the Area Resource Managers, other Area Leads and Practice Directors/Leads to develop the job description, hiring brief and workload justification for each new hire as well as participating in the interview process.
  • Evaluating staff performance, developing professional development plans and/or improvement plans, and completing the annual Grow Perform Succeed performance evaluations for direct reports.
  • Providing compensation recommendations to the Region Director for staff promotions, market adjustments, merit increases, and bonuses; r ecommending staff for leadership opportunities, staff development opportunities, and award programs.
  • Identifying cross GBA collaboration opportunities in the Eastern PA/DE/NJ Area; pursuing such opportunities upon approval of the Northeast Region Director.
  • Participating in go/no-go process for all opportunities in the Area; providing opportunity-specific details and recommendation on go/no-go to the Region Director upon request.
  • Ensuring all staff within the Area meet or exceed their Health & Safety metrics on a quarterly and annual basis.
  • Developing innovative ways to provide alternate delivery by understanding emerging digital trends and working closely with Account Leads and Project Managers to increase billable engagement with GECs.
  • Reviewing the performance of Arcadis Certified Project Managers (CPMs) within the Area and working with the Project Management Office (PMO) to evaluate that CPMs are qualified, up to date on required trainings, and performing consistent with their role and category.
  • Reviewing weekly finance reports and working with finance managers and CPMs within the Area to meet or exceed Area Plan requirements.
  • Conducting monthly project reviews with all CPMs within the Area utilizing our project and finance tools; developing and enforcing action plans, as necessary, to resolve any issues that are identified.
  • Championing all corporate and regional initiatives across the Area.
  • Ensuring all staff adhere to Arcadis Business Controls, values, accountability, and corporate training requirements in the Area.
  • Travel is required up to 30% as required for Team Leadership and Client/Market Engagement; all travel must be pre-approved by the Region Director.

Qualifications & Experience:

Required Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Management or a related field.
  • 15 years of management experience.

  • Strong leadership and communication skills and the ability to connect with, manage, mentor, inspire and lead the team and understand the skill set of a diverse team of people.
  • Ability to handle sensitive personnel issues and maintain confidentiality.
  • A demonstrated understanding of Arcadis' vision and values, capabilities, strategy, and priorities.
  • Hands-on experience with client account teams and technical service offerings.
  • Ability to support and implement company priorities such as GEC usage, project management excellence, digital offerings, and sustainability.
  • An understanding of Arcadis' Health & Safety (H&S) procedures.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Engineering or a related field.
  • Prior operational experience managing a team in excess of 50 people across multiple sub-geographies.
  • Demonstrated experience managing a Profit & Loss statement.
  • 20+ years of management experience.
  • Large scale Project Management and/or Account Leader experience.
