Job Description:

Lycoming College is hiring a Director of Public Safety!Lycoming College provides a first-rate undergraduate experience for an increasingly diverse student body that comes from across the United States and the globe. Toward that end, as outlined in its 2021 Strategic Plan, the College commits to fostering an inclusive and equitable campus community that supports all students, faculty, and staff.To help us achieve this goal, the Director, while being mindful of inclusivity and equity, is responsible for the effective and sensitive administration of safety, security, accident prevention, fire safety and parking enforcement programs.

The Director must be exceptionally attuned to the needs and experiences of all members of Lycomings increasingly diverse community and be adept at supporting and enhancing the campus experience of all with whom they work. Additionally, to create authentic relationships with students, faculty, and staff, the Director will acknowledge and appreciate each individual's unique identity characteristics and lived experiences.

Guided by the mission and strategic plan of the College, the Director will maintain productive working relationships with student leaders and colleagues from across campus (e.g., Building &Grounds, Residential Life, Information Technology Services, Chief Diversity Officer, to name a few). The Director will also advance on-going relationships with local law enforcement and community agencies (e.g., Wise Options, Williamsport Bureau of Fire, to name a few).

This position is a full-time, benefits-eligible position.

What will I do in this role?

Leadership and Administration

  • Direct and control a continuous patrol of College property to prevent crime and to protect life and property, enforce appropriate college regulations, and render service to the public.
  • Assist in the Colleges grievance and investigative processes (e.g., Community Standards, Title IX, Bias Response).
  • Develop and maintain formal and informal communication with law enforcement agencies, the local fire department, and other agencies concerned with safety and accident prevention.
  • Recruit and select public safety personnel, including student public safety aides.
  • Serve as the Colleges point person for Clery Act compliance, including drafting and submitting the annual Clery Report and other uniform crime reporting requirements.
  • Prepare and administer the department budget.
  • Work with administrative stakeholders to provide adequate building safety and security as well as to establish building hours.

Training & Education Programs

  • Provide training and development to public safety personnel to ensure that their exercise of authority demonstrates respect for individual and group rights by acknowledging the unique identity characteristics and lived experiences of all students, faculty, and staff.
  • Develop relevant in-service training programs (for public safety personnel and other offices as applicable) that support policy enforcement, fire safety, and accident prevention in the college environment.
  • Conduct campus-wide educational programs related to diversity, equity and inclusion, crime/conduct, accident, and fire prevention.

Policies and Procedures

  • Develop departmental policies and procedures that support effective and sensitive administration of safety, security, accident prevention, fire safety and parking enforcement programs that supports the well-being of all students, faculty, and staff.
  • Plan, develop, recommend, and implement policies, procedures, and programs related to safety practices applicable to employees, students, and visitors.
  • Develop procedures that supplement and support approved emergency response procedures.
  • Maintain, review, and update the security and emergency procedures manuals and other policies and operating statements.


What are we looking for?

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice administration or a related field and five years of progressively responsible experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • Prior experience with fostering an inclusive work environment in support of all students, faculty, and staff
  • A record of excellent leadership skills including (but not limited to) supervisory, scheduling, communication, investigatory, and de-escalation
  • A well-developed ability to work with students, staff, faculty, administrators, and community members with the utmost respect to who they are as individuals (in their identities and lived experiences)
  • Prior applicable experience in a college setting
