Senior Industrial Designer (New Health Care Company)

3M (New Health Care Company) are looking for a senior-level Industrial Designer to join our Medical Surgical (MedSurg) R&D team to help develop the next generation of solutions and platforms. We offer a highly collaborative team environment that spans disciplines - design, business, and engineering. Across multiple brands and product solutions bridging physical and multi-modal solutions, you will advocate the elevated standards and design processes for the optimal user experience shaping new and existing products under the mission: enabling better, smarter, safer healthcare to improve lives.

The Impact You'll Make in this Role

As a Senior Industrial Designer, you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity, collaborate across disciplines, engage with users, and contribute to design strategy with some of the most innovative and diverse people around the world. Here, you will make an impact by:

• Supports and leads industrial design for projects, brands, and programs within the R&D group of 3M's Medical Solutions Division (MSD).


• Identifies and develops improvements within a functional area of expertise.


• Coaches internal and external clients through the industrial design process including initial strategy, robust planning and development, project execution, insights development and synthesis, presentation or results, and communication of results.


• Collaborates across the organization with teams and other professional disciplines including engineers, market researchers, product owners, business partners, clinical specialists, design research, and digital designers in translating design work into actionable recommendations.


• Advocates for a customer or user centric approach by engaging with users (patients and health care providers) to establish and drive user needs throughout project(s). Support or conduct user research. Effectively defines and communicates user needs to cross-functional teams across R&D and business leadership. Highlights user need implications that require changes to the current strategy and development direction when necessary.


• Works with teams and agencies to manage design projects and maintain design intent. Co-creates with Technology & Innovation experts.


• Adapts and creates defined approaches to specific projects or business needs. Coaches and partners with clients throughout design projects.


• Strengthens industrial design as a discipline, both within R&D and MSD as well as across the organization, working with other design groups to share best practices and elevate design solutions.


• Takes responsibility for overall design strategy and delivery of product design for assigned brands.


• Defines design projects in approach. Experiences different user and consumer groups. Engages in-depth with branded portfolios.


• Facilitates or aids design research in moderation of design workshops.


• Seeks, develops and practices influencing skills and team leadership competencies.

Your Skills and Expertise

To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree or higher in industrial design, product design, or related field AND Five (5) years of industrial design experience in a private, public, government or military environment

• A High School diploma with nine (9) years of industrial design experience in a private, public, government or military environment

AND

In addition to the above requirements, the following are also required:

• One (1) years' experience working within the healthcare industry.


• Experience concept research, ideation, development, and verification practices.

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:

• Master's Degree (or equivalent expertise) in Design, Human Factors, Human Computer Interaction, Psychology, or a related field


• Two (2) years' designing within regulated environments, such as healthcare, aviation, finance, or government. Understanding of healthcare reimbursement and medical product regulations, including HIPAA and patient data privacy.


• Experience in product commercialization.


• Experience supporting design programs in healthcare.


• Experience working with medical devices, healthcare technologies, connected solutions, display embedded products, disposable/consumables, or wearables.

Work location:

• Hybrid Eligible (Job Duties allow for some remote work but require travel to Maplewood, MN on a regular basis.

Travel: May include up to 10% domestic travel.

Applicable to US Applicants Only:The expected compensation range for this position is $94,018 - $114,911, which includes base pay plus variable incentive pay, if eligible. This range represents a good faith estimate for this position. The specific compensation offered to a candidate may vary based on factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's relevant knowledge, training, skills, work location, and/or experience.
