Upper School Social Studies Teacher

Holland Hall was established in 1922 and currently serves approximately 1,000 preK through 12th grade students in a coeducational setting. As an Episcopal school distinguished by an excellent academic program and a student-centered environment emphasizing a holistic approach to education, we strive to provide a challenging, comprehensive educational experience grounded in a rigorous liberal arts college preparatory curriculum that promotes critical thinking and life-long learning. We seek to foster in each student a strong moral foundation and a deep sense of social responsibility. THIS POSITION 

We are seeking an educator with an engaging and enthusiastic approach to learning who will teach a variety of Social Studies classes according to the needs of the school. Social Studies classes engage students in the Harkness method of discussion, with discourse as a key component of all classes. This teacher will work collaboratively with a colleague who teaches the same core course to design and deliver an innovative curriculum. The Holland Hall Social Studies Department seeks to create students who are critical thinkers, who have the ability to analyze a variety of texts, and understand how these texts reflect or challenge dominant understandings of the world.  Our department embraces and reflects a commitment to the Episcopal tradition of teaching and challenging our community to discard stereotypes, embrace inclusion, and practice radical empathy in every aspect of life.

Generally, four or five classes with two to three preparations is a normal teaching load for a full-time faculty member at Holland Hall.  

This person will be an advisor to a small number of students and monitor and support their progress. At times, advocating for a student and communicating with their parents/caregivers will be necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS

Interested candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree. Previous teaching experience with the target age is also desired. A Master’s degree and independent school experience are preferred but not required. Special consideration will be given to exemplary candidates who can also support a significant extracurricular activity or coach a sport. 

WORKING CONDITIONS


  • The faculty work day is 7:45-3:45 with other duties as assigned outside this time frame.


  • Work may include time indoors and outdoors. 


  • Activities include walking, standing, bending, kneeling, lifting, talking, hearing and visually acuity.  


  • Occasionally lift up to 30 pounds.
