General Summary

GTI Energy, the nation’s leading research, development, and training organization serving energy markets, has an opportunity for an Electrical Engineer within the Research & Engineering group. The qualified candidate will actively support cutting-edge R&D functions in collaboration with technical staff, focused on bringing technology solutions to gas and energy utility companies. The candidate must be able to apply engineering practices to the development and deployment of electronic technology while working both collaboratively within the overall project team and while working independently on sub-tasks.

Work Location

The position will be based in the Chicagoland area at the GTI Energy Headquarters. We offer a hybrid/core work week, where employees are remote Mondays and Fridays, and required to be on-site Tuesday through Thursday.


 


Primary Responsibilities

This position is within a group of engineers and scientists that bring technology solutions to gas and energy markets. The candidate must be able to apply engineering practices to the development and deployment of electrical and electronic technology. The candidate must be able to work within the structure of an overall project team while being able to work independently on sub-tasks. Position responsibilities include but are not limited to:



  • Participate in developing requirements from customer needs discussions

  • Research and identify components, hardware, software that match design specifications

  • Assist in the construction and demonstration of technology proof of concept (PoC)

  • Document work in written, graphical, and presentation formats

  • Perform other duties as assigned


 


Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics

  • Experience with cloud side IoT platform such as Losant, ThingsBoard, AWS, Azure

  • Experience with design of electrical distribution systems and their components

  • Familiarity with IoT communication protocols such as LoRa, LTE, MQTT

  • Experience with analytical tools such as MATLAB, R, or Python

  • Experience with rapid prototyping tools such as Node Red or Micropython


 


Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics

  • Familiarity with National Instruments LabVIEW tools

  • Experience with electrical design in the context of chemical process plants

  • Knowledge of electrical area hazard classification systems

  • Proficiency with laboratory bench instrumentation and prototype construction is a plus

  • Embedded C/C++ firmware development experience with STM32 or other ARM families is a plus


 


Education and Experience

  • B.S. or M.S. degree in electrical engineering

  • 1+ year of prior engineering experience is preferred
