We are searching for a n Automation Engineering Director who will be instrumental in defining future product offerings for the Diabetes Operating Unit. Expected to lead a team in the design, development and implementation of high-volume automated manufacturing systems. This individual will be accountable to the Operations Team within the Diabetes OU, managing resources and programs according to Medtronic and industry policies, standards, and regulations. Further, the candidate will continue to improve departmental procedures while building upon a strong foundation of talent through hiring, coaching, and mentoring.

A Day in the Life

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned.

Plans, directs and implements all aspects of the company's design and development of new medical device products or software systems.


  • Defines and executes deliverables in the development of fully automated processes.
  • Engages early with Product Design and Equipment Design teams to ensure Design for Automation and Design for Manufacturing.
  • Ensure process and tooling design capabilities by means of comprehensive technical reviews, physical and simulated testing, and robust documentation.
  • Responsible for team professional development to promote engagement, growth, job satisfaction and organizational health.
  • Collaborate across Medtronic to ensure best practices are employed in design and development of processes.
  • Identifies , plans, and maintains resource needs, cost center budget, employee assignment, and staffing decisions for the production and engineering team.
  • Ensures engineering approach and designs conform to applicable industry standards and Medtronic procedures.
  • Oversees the investigation and evaluation of existing manufacturing technologies.
  • Guides the conceptualization of new methodologies, machines, processes.
  • Monitors documentation maintenance throughout all phases of process and tooling development.
  • Responsible for the development and implementation of activities in production area(s) to meet production goals, quality, and cost objectives .
  • Prioritizes production schedules based on product introduction, equipment efficiency, and materials supply.
  • Makes budgetary recommendations on capital expenditures and direct/indirect labor.
  • Selects and develops personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the production function.
  • Develops schedules and manpower requirements for assigned areas.
  • Travels to US domestic and international destinations supporting equipment development, construction, and implementation.
  • Works manages, and engages remotely with multidisciplinary teams across multiple time zones and geographies.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements


  • Bachelor's Engineering degree required
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience with 7+ years of managerial experience, or advanced degree with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience with 7+ years of managerial experience.
  • Able to travel 25% or more of the time, as required to accomplish business' goals.
Nice to Have

  • Prefer Mechanical or Electrical Engineering Degree.
  • Previous experience in the Medical Devices.
  • Advanced Engineering Degree
  • Experience in high-volume, electromechanical automated assembly.
  • Experience in regulated manufacturing environment, and ideally medical device industry.
  • Strong problem-solving, risk assessment, and negotiation skills.
  • Experience with complex, cross functional projects in a matrixed organization.
  • Experience managing projects in a deadline driven environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, interpersonal skills.
  • Experience applying situational leadership concepts across various intra and inter-departmental matters.
  • Automation Controls Experience
