Position Summary:

Provides skilled sub-journeyman level work in the performance of a variety of installation and maintenance tasks in several craft areas. Works independently and may provide training, guidance, and oversee the work performed by others.

Position Key Accountabilities:

1. Independently performs skilled maintenance, preventative maintenance (PM), repairs, and remodeling tasks. Tasks include, but are not limited to, removing and replacing ceiling tiles and floor tiles, water cleanup (including the use of a wet vacuum), moving and relocating furniture, performing light carpentry work, removing, repairing, and installing sheetrock, plumbing fixtures and associated piping, electrical equipment, various lights and light fixtures, painting, removing and installing water and air filters, fan belts, and electrical fuses, performing door maintenance including replacing doorstops, hinges, and other door hardware, and replacing baseboards and cove base.
2. May work independently when making minor repairs or assist journeyman level personnel, team leaders, and technicians directly when making major repairs in various trades (electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and others) with the troubleshooting, removal, repair, and installation of related equipment and performing preventative maintenance tasks. These tasks include, but are not limited to, the maintenance and repair of water features, domestic water systems, storm and sewage drains, sump pumps, and associated piping, boilers, exhaust fans, pumps, steam generators, medical air compressors, control air compressors, control air driers, vacuum pumps, and lighting systems.
3. May assist Carpenters on remodeling/construction assignments which would involve any or all of the following: demolishing walls, installing sheetrock, ceiling tiles, base boards, door stops, wall units, assemble and dismantle lab benches, book shelves, and partitions.
4. May communicate task and project information directly with vendors, project managers, and other customers (face-to-face, telephone, or email), oversee vendor projects, and verify and report the installation and completion status of projects to team leader or supervisor.
5. Enters, receives and completes assigned work orders using the computerized maintenance manager system (CMMS) through personal computer (PC) and smartphone applications. Performs assigned tasks following university/departmental policies/procedures, safety precautions, and trade codes.
6. Required to carry a university communication device as assigned and respond to calls during normal business hours.
7. This job classification is designated as "essential" at the UT Health Science Center at Houston. In case of an emergency, "essential" positions are those required to sustain clinical services and/or are responsible for the protection of university assets. Personnel in designated "essential" positions are expected to report to their designated work site during their appointed work schedules, even when the institution has been officially declared to be on "restricted access" or "closed" due to adverse conditions.
8. Performs other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

Basic PC skills

Minimum Education:

Completion of 10th grade. High school degree or equivalent preferred.

Minimum Experience:

Three (3) years apprentice level experience in a trade and/or general building maintenance experience.

Physical Requirements:

Exerts up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds frequently and/or up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects.

This job class may contain positions that are security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of Texas Education Code § 51.215

Residency Requirement:

Employees must permanently reside and work in the State of Texas.
