Position OverviewThe Department of Visual Art seeks a full-time Art/Design Lab Coordinator for Expanded Media, Photo Lab, Painting/Drawing, Foundations and to assist in the wood (Common Shop) and technology (VAST Lab) shops. The successful candidate must have the ability to work independently, and with a diverse group of people. Requires a flexible schedule to include Saturdays and some evenings.
Under the general direction of the Department Chair, and in consultation with area faculty and staff, the Art Lab Coordinator is responsible for the full range of duties associated with the operation, coordination, and instructional support services of the Photo Lab, Expanded Media, and Painting/Drawing/foundations Labs as well as providing support to the VAST Lab and Common Shop.
The Art Lab Coordinator will analyze, troubleshoot, and perform skilled repair and maintenance of equipment; design, fabricate, and construct equipment; provide comprehensive technical assistance and instructions on safe equipment operation to faculty, staff, and students; order, and maintain inventories of lab equipment and supplies; and independently plan and supervise the work of GTA instructional support hours and student hourlies, being directly responsible for hiring, scheduling, training, and evaluation. Assist area Coordinators with monitoring safety practices, appropriate tool, machinery, and equipment usage and maintenance.
Assist students with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop as well as a variety of 3D modeling software.
Assist students with a variety of creative projects that would typically include: wood fabrication, laser cutting, 3-D scanning, 3-D printing, and CNC Routers).
Assist with material sales.
20% - Painting/Drawing/foundations Labs
Coordinate with EHS on proper disposal of equipment and supplies
Instruct/train faculty and students in safety procedures.
Supervise and train Graduate Teaching Assistant staff
35% - Expanded Media Labs
Order repair parts, equipment, tools, materials and supplies
Manage, coordinate and schedule lab/studio
Supervise and train Graduate Teaching Assistant staff
Hire, train, assign and supervise student hourly employees
20% - Photo Lab
Reconcile purchases and monitor budget
Inventory and supervise checkout of equipment
Organize and maintain photo studio and equipment
Provide technical demonstrations to students and faculty in set up and use of equipment
5% - 4th floor studios
provide oversight for 4th floor graduate and undergraduate studios
supervise cleanliness of common areas
organize semester and yearly clean outs.
Position Requirementson-siteRequired Qualifications
Bachelor of Fine Art or equivalency and 3-year experience with methods and materials used in photo or digital fabrication
One year experience with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.
Demonstrated experience with 3D modeling software, as evidenced by application materials
Demonstrated Experience with documenting 2D and 3D artwork, as evidenced by application materials
Experience with fine art, design, and/or creative environments as demonstrated by application materials
Strong communication and organizational skills as evidenced by application materials
Demonstrated experience working independently to meet multiple deadlines as evidenced by letter of application.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with digital fabrication tools; CNC machine, 3-D printers, Laser cutters, etc.
Knowledge of photo processes
A demonstrated desire to learn new skills and to attend continuing education classes in pertinent
disciplines
Familiarity with budgeting and purchasing systems at the university level
MFA in related field
Knowledge of general wood shop equipment and safety practices as demonstrated by application materials.
