What do you get to do in this position?


  • Plan and perform all bench and required machine operations to construct new or make major alteration or repairs to tools, jigs, fixtures, punches, and dies involving a high degree of skills and a thorough knowledge of diel building practices.

  • Items built, generally are of complicated design and constructions such as jogs and fixtures involving close limits, forming punches and dies, compound cutting dies, progressive dies with more than 4 stations where tolerances are close and hard to meet, gauges with 4 or more inter-related gauging details when tolerances are rigid.

  • Build up master die sets using unit dies for fabrication.

  • Makes sketches of parts to be fabricated by machinist where required.

  • Instructs apprentices.

  • Try out and adjust dies in presses as necessary.

  • Maintain quality and work standards.

  • Observe plant regulation and safety rules.

  • May be required to perform mold work when circumstances so require.

  • All tool room machines and equipment.

  • All types of measuring instruments, tool and die maker's hand bench tools used.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • Experience in a toolroom environment.

  • Able to set up and operate computer and mechanically controlled milling, turning, drilling, and grinding machines

  • Able to work from engineering drawings and in close consultation with tooling and manufacturing engineers.

  • Have mastery in the field of making and maintaining stamping dies, production fixtures, and inspection gauges.

  • Expert in the use of measurement and inspection tools (micrometers, indicators, etc.)

  • Experience with CNC, CAD, CAM and other computer aided technologies.

  • Advanced knowledge in metalworking processes (stock removal, chip control, heat treating, etc.)
