Job Description:

We are seeking a Scientist III for a very important client.

Summary:

Seeking a skilled synthetic organic chemist to perform synthesis research and provide analytical support for clinical chemistry assay technologies. The candidate must possess strong synthetic organic skills and innovative thinking, as well as good written and communication skills. Candidate must be familiar with current techniques in the scientific literature. Successful candidate will conduct advanced research related to synthetic organic chemistry, characterize compounds via spectroscopic techniques (1H- and 13C NMR, UV-Vis, LC/MS, and HPLC), accurately communicate scientific observations to teams, and recommend strategies for future experiments.

Main Responsibilities
• Provides technical review, direction, and feedback to others. Conducts advanced research
• Designs and executes experiments leading to the development and implementation of synthetic organic targets; applies advanced multi-disciplinary analytical techniques to characterize synthetic constructs. Analyzes data from multiple experiments, formulates conclusions and determines future experiments
• Integrates data and identifies critical process variables
• Documents experimental procedures and results according to established guidelines
• Facilitates process transfer and training at sites of manufacture
• Participates in lab safety
• Expertise and Problem Solving: Establishes criteria and technical standards for excellence; anticipates, recognizes, and resolves technical problems
• Identifies new directions for research
• Responsible for implementing and maintaining the effectiveness of the quality system

Core Job Responsibilities:
• Responsible for implementing and maintaining the effectiveness of the quality system. Designs and conducts experiments, accomplishes established milestones and summarizes data, interprets, results and draws conclusions. Evaluates data using analytical methodologies to achieve results. Recommends options for future experiments. Presents scientific observations to others. Expertise and Problem Solving: Identifies technical alternatives. Utilizes multiple analytical instruments. Anticipates, recognizes and resolves technical problems. Lab Safety: Participates in lab safety. Documentation: Appropriately documents experimental procedures and results according to established guidelines.

Position Accountability / Scope:

Accountable across functional areas/programs within division. Contributes to project plan. Responsible for project completion.

Brief synopsis- The goal of this position will be to help finalize a new procedure for synthesizing a chemical blue dye, which is a key component used in a major Client product. The worker will need to help optimize multiple steps in the synthesis of the blue dye and work on a large scale reactions (+100 grams). The worker will need to use analytical chemistry techniques (NMR, HPLC, and UV-vis) to monitor the best outcome from those optimization experiments and strategies. The worker will spend a lot of time developing and finalizing the chromatography (purification) techniques used in each step of the synthesis. We are optimizing each step to improve yields and relative ease of synthesis. Results will need to be reported on a regular basis to a team of chemists in Oslo, Norway and receive feedback from the team on the best path forward. The worker will be working with a team of chemists in Lake County and will be expected to adhere to lab safety and other Client policies. Once a finalized method has been selected, multiple lots will be synthesized to ensure reproducibility of the new procedures. Characterization methods (HPLC) will need to be developed for the chemical products. The final procedure will be carefully documented and then transferred to the Oslo manufacturing site.

Minimum Education:
• Ph.D. in chemistry or B.S./M.S. with equivalency*. *Equivalency to Ph.D. defined as ability to hypothesize, design own experiments, draw conclusions and provide direction.

Minimum Experience / Training:
• Basic Computer Skills. Advanced knowledge of Organic chemistry and multiple analytical techniques/instruments.

Preferred Qualifications
• PhD 0-2 years' experience in synthetic organic chemistry or medicinal chemistry; or BS/MS with equivalent work experience.
• Candidate must have experience and understanding of synthetic chemistry techniques and purification methodologies, e.g. flash column chromatography, HPLC (reverse phase and normal phase) as well as analytical techniques (NMR, LC-MS, and UV-Vis).
• Experience with process chemistry, reaction optimization, and the ability to scaleup reactions from theoretical and practical evaluations a plus.
• Experience should include broad knowledge of modern organic chemistry and synthetic methods including multi-step synthesis as well as analytical techniques of small molecules.
• Experience in chemical database searching a plus.
• Candidates should work well in a team environment.

Education min. / Experience min

- PhD 0-2 years' experience in synthetic organic chemistry or medicinal chemistry; or BS/MS with equivalent work experience.

Top 5 skills/requirements

- 1. Synthetic organic chemistry

2. Process chemistry and reaction scale-up (+100g)

3. Flash chromatography, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and thin-layer chromatography (TLC)

4. Analytical techniques and method development - NMR, HPLC, mass spec, UV-vis
