Job Description:

About this Role

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will lead the design of the critical components and subassemblies of our prototypes and the development of our commercial products. Your expertise and creative problem-solving skills will immediately facilitate the successful development and improvement of our groundbreaking technologies. You will work with the multidisciplinary members of the R&D and Product teams and report to the Director of Engineering.

On the day-to-day, you'll be
  • Producing SOLIDWORKS CAD models and engineering drawings for new or iterated components and subassemblies of the EHF System.
  • Conducting design analyses (e.g., stress analysis, tolerance stack up, FEA), to assess the feasibility, reliability, and performance of your concepts and prototypes, informing design changes to be made.
  • Collaborating with the Engineering team to draft innovative concepts and designs that will improve the efficacy, capabilities, reliability, and robustness of the EHF System, including designing Client high voltage pulsed power cables and terminations.
  • Conducting electrical simulations (e.g., SPICE or FEA) to assess the impact of design changes to components or subassemblies on the system-level efficacy.
  • Interfacing directly with, and submitting RFQs with vendors, suppliers, and machine shops for your designs or other COTS parts and components.
  • Executing FMEA for newly designed components and subassemblies and update the FMEA for revised designs to Client and mitigate risks before implementation.
  • Performing RCA and document lessons learned after unsuccessful prototype testing to derisk redesign efforts.
  • Authoring technical reports following laboratory or field-testing to document the objectives, results, and conclusions of the experiments.
  • Building/assembling prototypes, and conducting subsequent laboratory testing, both at the Jersey City facility and at the R&D laboratory in Alabama.
  • Presenting your designs at design reviews, documenting the feedback from the technical team, and iterating your designs accordingly.
  • Traveling to field-test sites (out-of-state) a few times a year to perform system-level validation testing with our clients.
  • Processing and analyzing data captured during testing and producing visualizations or presentations of the results to be incorporated in the corresponding technical reports.
  • Engaging in technical discussions amongst Engineering, R&D, and Product during standup meetings, facilitating collaborative problem solving to inform operational decisions and design changes.
  • Documenting the results of your analyses, capturing the lessons learned and proving metrics to assess your future designs, thus streamlining design iteration.

What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a relevant engineering discipline. Advanced degree preferred.
  • Meticulous, analytical, and creative problem-solver with an ability to apply the first principles of engineering and physics to inform developments and verify results.
  • Extensive understanding of mechanical engineering principles, including material selection and DFM.
  • Comprehensive understanding of electrical engineering principles, particularly in electromagnetics.
  • Proven experience using GD&T and producing engineering drawings.
  • Proven experience producing FMEA and RCA reports for electromechanical systems.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced startup environment with shifting priorities.
  • Outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal, whether in small group discussions or one-on-one.
  • Some programming experience in Python (data analysis & DSP) is preferred.
  • Familiarity with design analysis tools and techniques (e.g., ANSYS, SPICE simulations) is highly preferred.
  • Direct experience with tools and equipment in utility construction is a plus.
  • Direct experience with tools and equipment in oil field services is a plus.
  • 2+ years of experience with high voltage systems is highly preferred.
  • 2+ years of experience designing electrical cables & terminations is highly preferred.
