Job Description:

GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: Summarize the nature and level of work performed.


The MGH Sample Processing Laboratory (SPL) provides services involved in preparing research samples obtained from patients enrolled in clinical trials of investigational cancer treatments for storage and shipment. The primary role of this position is to transport samples from the holding stations located in the patient treatment areas of the hospital to the SPL and assist with their storage in ultralow temperature freezers.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Indicate key areas of responsibility, major job duties, special projects and key objectives for this position. These items should be evaluated throughout the year and included in the written annual evaluation.


• Transport samples from holding stations in patient treatment areas to the Sample Processing Laboratory (SPL).


• Transport packaging and shipping materials from other areas of the hospital to the SPL.


• Assist with storing processed samples in the ultralow temperature freezers in GRJ1004.


• Verify the temporary sticker on each sample transport tube and place them in the proper fiberboard storage box in the freezers based upon the DFCI protocol number.


• Assist with packaging samples for shipment as needed in collaboration with the Clinical Laboratory Assistants responsible for shipping.


• Transport packages to the MGH Mail Room for courier service pick up.


• Provides assistance to disease group Clinical Research Coordinators (CRCs) working in the clinical areas of the hospital with unpacking, stocking, and organizing supplies such as kits, tubes, and shippers used as a consumable supply for a clinical trial.


• Assist with or perform any other tasks as directed by senior laboratory staff.



Qualifications

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED: Must be realistic, objective, measurable and related to essential functions of this job.


• Ability to walk long distances within the hospital while carrying a sample transport container or pushing a cart on a continuous basis throughout the work day.


• Ability to lift boxes that are moderately heavy (< 25 pounds).


• Responsible for carrying a communication device (i.e. a pager) and responding to pages within a few minutes. Prioritizes workload based on demands of patient care.


• Effective interpersonal communication skills.


• A high level of responsibility and ability to work effectively with minimal direct supervision.


• Ability to use Microsoft Office programs.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Describe the conditions in which the work is performed.


• Duties will be performed within the hospital requiring the ability to work standing up and while walking for prolonged periods and lifting moderately heavy packages and objects.


• Handling biological specimens, dry-ice, and other potentially hazardous materials.


• The position involves a 40 hour work week, 8 hours/day Monday-Friday with a 30 min break, typically from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., although the shift is subject to change to accommodate samples collected during the normal operating hours of outpatient clinics.
