Wellesley Career Education seeks an experienced career advisor with a background in consulting, finance and/or business to join our career advising team. Career Education prides itself on the individualized support, expertise, network and experiential learning it offers to students as they explore and embark on their career journeys. This role is responsible for educating our students and alums about the required training, evolving trends and range of opportunities most prevalent in these fields, offering them professional guidance, connections to alum mentors and industry knowledge that will strengthen their internship and career searches. This individual will partner with colleagues within Career Education who support students and alums at all stages of their career journey and with colleagues across the College, including faculty across departments and peers in the Division of Student Life. A successful candidate for this position will build strong rapport with students, have a track record of building relationships and collaborative partnerships with various stakeholders (including faculty, staff, employers, and alums), strong organizational skills in support of event planning and resource management, and the ability to adapt to changing student interests and job markets. An ideal candidate will also demonstrate a longstanding commitment to elevating underrepresented voices in consulting, finance, business and marketing.
Primary Position Responsibility:
Student and Alum Advising
Serve as advisor and connector within assigned career fields, maintaining current information on recruiting practices, timelines, fellowships, research opportunities and industry trends
Provide one-on-one advising appointments, group advising sessions, and weekly drop-in hours
Adjust and adapt advising to the unique backgrounds and identities of Wellesley students, particularly those who are underrepresented in these fields
Educate and prepare students and graduates on the specifics of a successful internship or job search strategy, including document review, resources for research, networking techniques, interview preparation, including case interviews, and salary negotiation
Educate and prepare students and graduates on graduate school application processes - particularly for MBAs in traditional and 2+2 programs - including application timelines and planning, academic planning, test taking, document review, school choice, and scholarship negotiation.
Assist students in leveraging the use of Handshake, LinkedIn, the Wellesley Hive (Wellesley's mentorship platform), social media, and other technology in their internship, job or graduate school search strategy
Emphasize the importance of self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and reflection as part of one's career development, complementing and building upon the guidance offered by Career Education's Associate Directors/Advisors for Career Exploration
Advise students participating in relevant Wellesley-sponsored summer internships, engaging them in preparatory, mid-experience and/or debrief conversations that reflect on their experiences in the context of their larger career planning and goals
Collaborate with Associate Director of Marketing & Operations to ensure strong and targeted content for newsletters, emails and notices to those interested in these fields
Conduct ongoing research and adapt advising, programs and resources in the assigned fields to ensure that each remains current and relevant
Programming and Events
Create, oversee and manage all logistical components for events and programs, including alumnae panels, workshops and other events, that reflect a variety of opportunities and career journeys in the assigned fields
Collaborate closely with the Employer Engagement team in the promotion of at least one career fair per year and other spotlight/boutique recruiting events focused on the assigned career fields
Collaborate with Career Education colleagues in the organization and execution of events that review basic career search skills, including resume and cover letter basics, the job and internship search, salary negotiation, networking and informational interviews
Collaborate with faculty, departments, programs, student organizations (particularly the Consulting Club, the Investment Society, Wellesley in Asset Management and Finance and Wellesley in Business) and other campus partners to offer targeted career-related programing for various student populations
Internal Career Education Collaboration
Partner closely with the Associate Director of Employer Engagement by sharing advising insights to ensure that the industries and employers of greatest interest to our students are well-represented in our employer engagement outreach and as campus recruiters
Partner closely with the Employer Engagement team in identifying and promoting diversity pipeline opportunities for students in the assigned fields
Promote Wellesley-sponsored internships to students, participate in relevant application review and feedback events and engage in the application assessment process twice annually
Collaborate with the Program Director for Fellowships in the promotion of fellowships that support students and alumnae in the assigned fields
Serve on office-wide committees as needed and support "all hands on deck" events including orientation, career retreats, career fairs and internship events
Partner with the Director of Exploration and Experiential Learning in the strategic design and management of a distinct Career Education program or project (examples include student employment professional development resources, the Life After Wellesley program and a curriculum for our student internships program)
Campus Partnerships, Cross-Functional Teams and College Initiatives
Serve as a liaison to College departments and advisory boards as appropriate, ensuring seamless and constant communication and two-way information sharing, including at least one campus partner supporting a specific student population
Serve on various cross-functional teams and campus-wide committees to promote the vision and direction of Career Education and the College as a whole.
Represent Wellesley and Career Education in local and national professional associations and conferences in order to stay current with career services and industry standards and changes
Education Required:
3-5 years relevant experience in education, career services, recruiting, or respective industry areas and Bachelor's degree required
Master's degree in area relevant to assigned fields, Higher Education, or other relevant advanced degree preferred
Broad knowledge of career development or career coaching theory and strategies
Broad knowledge of recruiting practices, industry trends, and best practices in career services, especially as related to the assigned fields
Previous experience in working closely with employers, students, alumnae, faculty, and/or campus partners
Experience creating and implementing programs, events, and/or webinars
Skills and Abilities Required
