Saint Louis University (SLU) School of Medicine and SSM Health's SLUCare Academic Division seek an accomplished physician leader to serve as Chair of the Department of Pathology. The Department offers pathology education, patient care, and a growing research enterprise. With the 2022 integration of the School's physician practice organization, SLUCare Physician Group, into SSM Health, the Department of Pathology is poised for growth across its mission areas of clinical and translational research and patient care, and for revisioning of its graduate medical educational mission. The Chair reports to the Dean of the School of Medicine with regard to the Department's academic mission of education and research and to the Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs with regard to its patient-care mission.
Department of Pathology
The mission of the Department of Pathology of SLU School of Medicine and SLUCare Physician Group is to deliver patient-centered quality diagnostic services, provide exceptional pathology education, and advance innovative research. Across all categories of appointment, the department comprises 44 faculty. The department divisions include Anatomic Pathology, Clinical Pathology/Laboratory Medicine, Community Hospital, Forensic Pathology, Pediatric Pathology and Research.
The Department provides a full range of reference laboratory services, including adult, pediatric, and perinatal autopsy; placental pathology; dementia-related brain pathology; cytopathology; flow cytometry; toxicology; renal, muscle, and peripheral nerve technical and professional services; histology technical work to include immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, and histochemistry; and electron microscopy.
Through the clinical integration with SSM Health, SLU is further deepening its collaborative relationship with a robust community pathology service line. This relationship expands the clinical referral network for SLU and expands clinical trials and educational opportunities more broadly, including collaboration with industry, government, and community partners. By the same token, the integration with SSM Health creates exciting opportunities for Pathology to enhance SSM's diagnostic services, to extend its academic expertise across the SSM system of hospitals and clinics, to do research at scale, and to become a regional testbed for innovation in pathology and laboratory medicine.
