Job Description Summary

The Emergency Management Coordinator is responsible for maintaining a secure environment at the front line of service. Conducts safety audits of the building, facilities, and equipment. Determines safety-training requirements and provides employees with safety training applicable to their work processes. Investigates accidents to determine root cause, circumstances and contributing factors. Develops recommendations and follow-up to prevent accident recurrence. The Shift Sergeant, Security will supervise Public Safety Officers on assigned shift, and perform related work as required.

Job Description



The Emergency Management Coordinator will:


  • Ensures a secure environment at the front line of service by conducting safety audits of the property and equipment.


  • Determines safety-training requirements and provides employee safety training applicable to job duties and responsibilities.


  • Enforces hospital safety and security rules and regulations as required including but not limited to smoking and parking policies.


  • Attends scheduled training events and meetings as standing member of the Region 11 Healthcare Coalition.


  • Ensures items obtained through Region 11 Healthcare Coalition are properly stored and maintained. Completes pick list inspection as required annually by Region 11 Healthcare Coalition.


  • Serves as co-chair on the Emergency Management Committee and other committees as assigned.


  • Maintains records of real events/drills as required by Joint Commission, to include off-site locations.


  • Conducts disaster drills at both the institute and offsite locations, as required by Joint Commission.


  • Performs duties in the absence of the Security Lieutenant


  • Assists with hiring Security personnel; evaluates and schedules appropriate staffing for daily operation and special events.


  • Performs all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.


  • Supervises Public Safety Officers on assigned shift, including preparing shift schedules.


  • Monitors work performance of Public Safety Officers and conducts performance reviews.


  • Provides support for investigating accidents and suspected crimes, reports findings, and pursues appropriate course of action.


  • Represents the Security department as a member of Emergency Response Team.




Reporting Relationships


  • Reports to Director of Security Services




Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required


  • Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice, Communication, or related Field required. Will consider an associate's degree plus additional experience in lieu of. Minimum 5 years of security experience or a related field preferred or Military experience.


  • Minimum of 20 hours of training as outlined by the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation. Certification as a Peace Officer in the State of Illinois waives this requirement


  • Knowledge of security procedures, investigation techniques, and public safety rules and codes.


  • Must have well-developed communication/interpersonal skills in order to effectively interact and train staff as well as to confront and control potentially hostile persons/situations.


  • Ability to conduct investigations and complete reports.


  • Ability to transfer patients from vehicle to wheelchairs, consistent with lifting up to 35 lbs.


  • Analytical ability to utilize Outlook, Cerner, and C-Cure systems


  • Knowledge of proper body mechanics for transferring patients into and out of vehicles.


  • Must have a valid State of Illinois driver's license and a MVR record free from moving violations.


  • Certified in IAHSS Basic Course, or ability to obtain


  • Completion of required NIMS and HICS training (Within the first 12 months of employment). Advise Emergency Management Committee Chairperson of required education/training of hospital staff.


  • Obtain the Illinois Professional Emergency Manager (IPEM) Program Certification (Within the first 48 months of employment)


  • Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations and to determine proper course of action


  • Knowledge of City, and State laws as it relates to Public Safety


  • Knowledge of effective methods of investigation with the ability to ascertain facts by personal contact, observations, and the examination of records.


  • Ability to enforce laws firmly, tactfully with respect for the rights of others Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with students, the public, and other employees and exhibit outstanding customer service




Working Conditions


  • Position is subject to work weekends and holidays.


  • Must be able to work in all weather conditions.


  • Ability to climb, walk, run, and stand or sit for long periods.


  • Ability to lift up to 35 lbs.


  • Occasional risks to personal safety when confronting and restraining individuals.
