Job Description:

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Department of Pathology is seeking a Research Specialist to conduct research using histotechnology applications, coordinate the processing and analysis of data, supervise laboratory staff and manage their workflow, and develop new and/or revised research methodologies. This position is 100% time, Monday-Friday, 1st shift.


Duties to include:

  • Perform all procedures in the field of histotechnology such as embedding, staining, identifying tissues/cells.
  • Perform immunohistochemistry procedures.
  • Assist in presentation and publication of work.
  • Exercises functional and administrative supervision over research assistants, research associates, laboratory assistants, student technicians, and other assigned research personnel.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and respond to requests of the section management.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a biological science or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Requires knowledge and experience in the discipline of histotechnology- equivalent to a minimum of 3 years full time experience in histotechnology (including immunohistochemistry).
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Must have demonstrated attention to detail and quality in routine work performance.



Desirable Qualifications:

  • Current ASCP certification as a histotechnologist (HTL).
  • Previous experience and expertise in working with common research model species (e.g. mouse, pig and ferret).
  • Experience in coordinating lab workflow to staff for efficient throughput.
