Job Description:

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Pharmaceutical Care is seeking a full-time Pharmacy Technician Certified to join our team. Under general pharmacist supervision, coordinates and performs as necessary the technical activities of dispensing areas (Ambulatory Surgery Center pharmacy & Clinical Cancer Center pharmacy), including prescription related & sterile product related functions. Prepares, packages, and safely compounds medications (including hazardous substances) accurately and efficiently. Requires collaboration with departmental and other hospital unit staff. Under general supervision of technician supervisor, carries out activities supportive of development, coordination, and training of assigned areas. All pharmacy technicians must be certified within one year of employment. This position will work 8 hour shifts scheduled between the hours of 7:00 am - 7:00 pm, Monday - Friday.


The Department of Pharmaceutical Care intends to hire at either the Pharmacy Technician, Trainee classification, Pay Grade 8, or Pharmacy Technician, Certified, Pay Grade 10, based on the qualifications of the successful candidate. Duties to include:


  • Under pharmacist supervision, prepares patient specific sterile products including hazardous medications.
    • Use appropriate PPE & identify/use appropriate preparation supplies (i.e CSTD).
    • Prepare products according to NIOSH, USP, and SOP guidelines.
  • Performs cleanroom maintenance activities.
    • Assist with cleaning & decontamination of PEC and SEC in accordance with SOPs.
    • Assist with upkeep and cleaning of other equipment and maintain records.
  • Successfully complete/pass aseptic compliances and pass didactic test on reoccurring basis as dictated by SOPs.
  • Perform technical activities in ASC operating rooms including the daily replenishment, maintenance, management, and optimization of anesthesia workstations (AWS)
  • Provide patient/customer service at Triage Window. Communicate with the general public, patients, and other health care personnel in accordance with established guidelines. Receive and screen prescriptions for completeness and check for prescription readiness.
    • Conduct interview with patient or patient's representative to collect and record patient profile information including: demographic information, third party coverage information, weight of pediatric patients, medication allergy information, medical conditions, and current list medications being taken other than those presented.
    • Determine waiting/pick-up time and prioritize accordingly.
    • Recognize workflow patterns for effective triage of prescriptions.
    • Answer telephone lines and triage phone calls per established policies and procedures.
  • Prescription processing
    • Enter/verify patient coverage/third party information.
    • Verify correct quantity & day supply of medication.
    • Correctly set-up prescription fill/refill for pick-up or mail out per established procedures.
    • Document important notes as needed in Willow Ambulatory and/or Epic.
  • Fill/refill prescriptions
    • Read label for accuracy and correct as needed.
    • Label and package the correct medication.
    • Generate and/or maintain appropriate records related to prescription dispensing.
  • Prepare prescriptions for mailing and shipping according to established policies and procedures.
  • Perform inventory maintenance activities.
    • Review 'Ready to Dispense' queue for medications that have not been picked up by patients and follow-up as needed.
    • Assist with daily & monthly drug inventory counts as directed by the senior technician and/or supervisor.
    • Conduct assigned audits in patient care clinic areas (Certified Technicians Only)
  • Assist with training of new technicians and student technicians.
  • Maintain area orderliness and cleanliness.
    • Audit area for compliance with medication security measures, segregation of dosage forms, expiration dates, approved samples, Emergency Medication Tray expiration date, and appropriate drug storage.
  • Perform activities involving narcotics and controlled substances including:
    • Conduct weekly and monthly inventory counts as instructed by senior technician/pharmacist.
    • Assist with drug diversion surveillance by auditing records associated with dispensing of narcotics and controlled substances.



Certified Technician Minimum Eligibility Requirements:

  • Registered with the Pharmacy Board at the time of hire.
  • National certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Must meet ongoing education requirements and maintain certification.
  • High school diploma or the equivalent.
  • Experience
  • Any combination of two years of post-high school experience and/or education in the natural sciences OR
  • Satisfactory completion of an accredited pharmacy technician training program


  • Trainee Technician Minimum Eligibility Requirements:

  • Registered with the Pharmacy Board at the time of hire.
  • All pharmacy technicians must be certified within one year of employment.
  • High school diploma or the equivalent.
  • Experience:
  • Any combination of two years of post-high school experience and/or education in the natural sciences OR
  • Satisfactory completion of an accredited pharmacy technician training program.


  • Special Qualifications:

    • Experience with Public Contact/Customer Service

    Desired Qualifications:

    • Ability to perform ratio/proportion equations
    • Experience with inventory maintenance activities
    • Experience working in team environment
    • Experience working in detail-oriented work environment
    • Knowledge of windows-based computer programs
    • Experience working in environment requiring accuracy
    • Experience working in healthcare with one-on-one patient interaction & experience handling challenging interactions in work environment.
    • Prefer National Career Readiness Certificate at Silver Level
