Required:

Doctorate in Environmental Science, Biology, Geology, Natural Resource Management or a closely related field. Doctoral candidates who are near completion will be considered. Must have a strong commitment to undergraduate education and possess excellent communication skills; be technically current; be an enthusiastic team player who is willing to work in a multidisciplinary program; and have demonstrated skills in leadership. Candidates must already be authorized to work in the U.S.


Preferred:

Preference will be given to a candidate with interest or background in water science, hydrology or hydrogeology.


Primary Responsibilities:

Appointment Date: January 2024
Tenure-track, 9 month appointment with summer teaching available.



This will be a 50% teaching/course development, 25% research within the Rio Grande Research Center, and 25% Program Coordinator for the new Master in Environmental Science. The Program Coordinator will coordinate and oversee the development of a new online Masters in Environmental Science with concentration in Biology, Geology, and Natural Resource Conservation. This program will be an online program which will offer an accelerated 30-credit hour degree broken into 8-week terms. The development will include developing additional courses, working with faculty to modify existing courses to the new format and working with the Department Chair to develop a course rotation. The teaching appointment will include teaching 6 sch per semester of undergraduate and graduate courses within the Department of Natural Sciences In the candidate's area of expertise. The research appointment will include the development of a water related research program within the Rio Grande Research Center. Additional responsibilities include participation in and helping conduct departmental sponsored events; participation in faculty governance and service activities at the departmental, college and university levels; and engagement in scholarly activity. Such activities are broadly defined and may include the scholarship of teaching, research, or similar activities.

The University offers an excellent benefits package to faculty members including: a free basic individual health care package, the option of a state retirement through Teachers Retirement System (TRS) or Optional Retirement Package (ORP), traditionally available summer teaching opportunities, small class sizes, and a small private liberal arts college environment rarely found in a state supported university.


The Department of Natural Sciences offers BS and MS degrees in Biology, Geology, and Natural Resource Management. The graduate programs enroll approximately thirty students, primarily thesis seeking. Although research is encouraged, excellence in classroom instruction is the first priority of the department.
Texas Law requires a 60 day waiting period before new state employees are eligible to enroll in health insurance.

Sul Ross State University Alpine Campus is in the Scenic Davis Mountains of West Texas, is a member of the Texas State University System, is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award Associate, Bachelor's, and Master's degrees, and has an enrollment of approximately 2,000 students of campus in Alpine, Texas.
