Job Description Summary

Reporting to the Senior Director of Development, UPHS, and working closely with Penn Medicine Development's Chief Advancement Officer team, the Senior Director of International Development will play a key role as member of the Penn Medicine's Development and Alumni Relations (PMDAR) program.

The Senior Director will be responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive and coordinated international fundraising strategy for several cities within a given international geographical region which support the goals and objectives of a Penn Medicine Development office. The international strategy must not only consider cultural nuances, number of constituencies, their capacity and philanthropic outlook, but also admissions, donor profiles, political climates and more. Each strategy must also support Penn Medicine academic, research, and clinical priorities. The Senior Director will be expected to be intimately familiar with the specifics of the region and serve as an expert resource to other colleagues. In addition, the Senior Director will need to develop a close partnership with the Senior Managing Director of International Development in Penn Central Development to help achieve these objectives.

The Senior Director will provide leadership and support to Penn Medicine in making programmatic decisions by providing expertise about regions, international fundraising trends, school, and center priorities and by engaging in ongoing and strategic planning. The objective of the strategic plan is to better understand the complex international philanthropic landscape to increase awareness of Penn and its institutional fundraising needs. This would include prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of individuals. The expected outcome would be securing increased principal gift support (gifts of $5 million or more) and major gift support ($100,000 or more) from international patients, alumni, parents, and friends of the university. This high-level work involves frequent interaction and active partnerships with Penn Medicine and Penn Leadership (e.g., President, Provost, Deans), Volunteers (e.g., Trustees, Penn Medicine Board of Trustees), and Senior Administrators (e.g., Vice President for Development & Alumni Relations, Chief Advancement Officer Penn Medicine) to ensure existing and emerging principal gifts level constituents are best positioned with Penn Medicine and provide maximum levels of philanthropic support for Penn Medicine.

The Senior Director serves as an advocate for all Penn Medicine areas and priorities. In the "Generalist" role, the Senior Director will need to provide thought leadership to, and spearhead development of, efforts with Penn Medicine's large-scale interdisciplinary initiatives to strengthen and expand principal gift “pipeline”. These strategies will most likely involve collaborations across PMDAR and Penn. The Senior Director will utilize the President, Deans, Faculty, and Senior Officers in select international development activity, in consultation with the Senior Executive Director and Penn Medicine's CAO team. The Senior Director will have direct oversight and management of Penn Medicine's Global Council.
