Job Description:

Flexible Work Schedule - Hybrid

The primary function of the Sr. (Lead/Principal) Engineer is to provide technical support for the activities of the Transmission Operations Department (TOD) and TOD's sister Outage Analysis Technologies (OAT) and Generation Department within the Operations Planning Division. Sr. Lead Engineers perform the analyses and coordination of transmission outage requests, summer seasonal assessments and other regional studies. Sr. Lead Engineers create temporary transmission operating procedures and maintain PJM manuals. Sr. Lead Engineers support tools/initiatives such as Transient Stability Analysis (TSA), Voltage Stability Analysis (VSA), Transmission Adequacy Reliability Assessment (TARA), Intelligent Event Processor (IEP), Emergency Procedures (EP) and SynchroPhasors as well as other automation initiatives such as Keystone, a custom application developed in support of the PJM transmission outage study process. Engineers interact with the transmission owners, representatives of adjoining systems, PJM Reliability Engineers and PJM Dispatch, PJM Applied Solutions and PJM ITS. Finally, these positions are part of a matrixed organization between the two departments – TOD and OAT with duties split between Operational Planning Analysis/Coordination under TOD and application development/enhancement under OAT. As such, additional responsibilities will include rotations through each department learning and performing the key responsibilities of each.

Essential Functions:


  • Develop Operational Base Cases and Conduct Seasonal Studies - Create operational base cases from the MMWG series cases using PSS/E.


  • Conduct seasonal operating studies under the auspices of the OATF and other RRO study initiatives.


  • Develop and maintain the necessary transmission system models.


  • Manage Transmission Outage Process - Perform power flow analysis, grant, or reject transmission outage requests.


  • Maintain transmission outage schedules in coordination with transmission owners.


  • Identify and report potential operating issues related to near-term transmission outages.


  • Coordinate outages to reduce FTR in adequacy by determined metrics.


  • Coordinate Transmission and Generation Outages.


  • Schedule Generation to support Transmission Outages.


  • Perform power system analyses and document analysis results.


  • Apply sound engineering judgment to create innovative solutions to engineering problems


  • Support PJM compliance efforts to adhere to NERC and RRO standards.


  • Coordinate the analysis activities of less experienced engineers, review results of analysis performed by other engineers.


  • Represent PJM on Transmission-related Committees and Study Groups - Represent PJM on committees sponsored by NERC, RFC, PJM, or others.


  • Represent PJM on study groups that conduct interregional studies or other special studies.


  • Support PJM Procedures/Tools/Initiatives - Engineers create temporary transmission operating procedures and maintain PJM manuals.


  • Engineers support tools/initiatives such as TSA/VSA, TARA, IEP, Keystone, and eDart


  • Engineers support integration of technologies such as SynchroPhasors.


  • Develop and implement new technologies to create increased efficiencies and improved reliability.


  • Coordinate with Dispatch and Reliability Engineers propose enhancements to existing applications and processes, propose development of new tools and processes, and assist in the development of tools for the economic evaluation of efficient system operation.


  • Other Responsibilities - Provides leadership to staff in the completion of complex engineering assignments that support present and future needs of Transmission Operations.


  • Work with the Department Manager in providing resources to ensure a well-trained staff to support the key roles and responsibilities of Transmission Operations.


  • Be a problem solver that proactively addresses customer needs and reliability requirements with innovative, creative, and cost-effective solutions.


Characteristics & Qualifications:

Required:


  • BS degree in Engineering or equivalent work experience


  • At least 5 years of work experience with NERC and Regional Reliability Organization standards


  • Ability to produce high-quality work products with attention to detail


  • Experience in quantitative and qualitative analysis


  • Ability to use mathematical and electrical theory


  • Ability to troubleshoot and provide technical support


  • Ability to use mathematical and electrical theory




Preferred:


  • MS degree in Engineering


  • Experience with PJM operations, markets, and planning functions


  • Experience using PSS/e (power system analysis program)
