This experienced Engineering position will be responsible for planning and conducting independent work requiring judgment in the evaluation, selection, application, and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria. This will be done utilizing increased knowledge and experience of the conveyor and automation engineering field as related to material handling systems, equipment, processes, and facilities, to lead and support multiple project efforts for Fortna's Clients. This position will also devise new approaches to problems and prepare or modify drawings, specifications, calculations, charts, and graphs, and monitor work for compliance to applicable codes and accepted engineering practices. This position will also be required to support the day-to-day activities of the engineering department and project engineering group and will lead multiple smaller projects or single large projects including retro fits and new equipment facility projects. This position could lead larger and more complex projects. The associate will need good material handling design skills, the ability to apply learned knowledge to complete tasks as assigned and a willingness to increase knowledge.



PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:


  • Supporting projects in the Operations Design/Solutions Development phase and their transition into the Detail Design/Implementation phase.

  • Leading one and supporting multiple projects throughout the Integrated Detail Design (IDD) and Implementation phases. This will include RFP/Supplier Selection, detailed conveying design, ordering of equipment, reviewing Supplier Approval Drawings, development of installation drawing packages, and support of installation contractor, Project Manager, and Site Manager with installation efforts.

  • Leading all required portions of a project through the requirements engineering and final engineering (implementation) processes including engineering budget, schedule-tracking, submitting weekly status reports and maintaining the Engineering Project Workbook.

  • Taking ownership of all responsibilities of a project to ensure success.

  • Exploring and supporting trade-offs of alternative concepts and leading or supporting alternative analysis justification to drive to the best design during all phases of a project while maintaining the projects business case.

  • Demonstrating leadership qualities and providing proactive communications regarding project status updates and assignments.

  • Acting as the conduit in engineering to ensure an on-time and under budget implementation.

  • Attending project meetings and Client meetings as required by project cadence and providing meeting minutes to team members.

  • Requirements Engineering and Procurement Phase:

    • Supporting internal kick off and efforts to transition from Ops Design.

    • Leading detail design (utilizing AutoCAD, DCdesigner, DCconceptor {Fortna's propriety 3D drawing tools}), design lock with Client (signature required), and preparing all bills of material (BOMs).

    • Leading internal design reviews, QC process, engineering weekly meeting, and publishing weekly engineering status reports.

    • During procurement, supporting Client meetings, identifying potential suppliers, setting up tier levels, supporting request for proposal (RFP) generation, scorecard development, and reviewing and supporting supplier presentations and site visits.

    • Estimating coordination, confirming and supporting capital budgets, and attending all price reviews.

    • Helping to develop implementation schedule and budget.

    • Tracking engineering schedule, budgets, and resource planning (report to engineering directors).

    • Scheduling and phasing review within engineering.

    • Interfacing with contractor/architect. Conducting site visits to determine and validate field dimensions.

    • Updating Pre-Functional Specification Document (PFSD) and supporting FSD generation.



  • Implementation Phase:

    • Leading final engineering effort and engineering weekly meeting, publishing weekly engineering status reports (consolidated from electrical engineering, design engineering, technical services), tracking engineering schedule and budgets, and resource planning (report to engineering directors).

    • Calculation of conveyor point loads along with header steel layout & design

    • Working to ensure the original business case is being satisfied.

    • Attending project kick-off meeting and reviewing the description of operation.

    • Leading ITS project introduction meeting/internal kick-off (w/pre-read document).

    • Develop RFPs for suppliers (MHE, S&S, and Installation services)

    • Reviewing MHE System implementation plan with the project manager and the site manager (includes phasing).

    • Ensuring drawing quality control and quality assurance needed to provide a good implementation and supporting DQC Process (Mechanical & Electrical).

    • Leading final drawing approval with the Client.

    • Facilitating meetings: speeds and feeds, design reviews, etc.

    • Coordinating all prototype efforts (plans, signoff, budgets, etc.).

    • Coordinating onsite engineering support during installation and during commissioning.

    • Ensuring Client's key objectives remain in focus.

    • Managing project during testing and go-live.

    • Managing project close-out and final documents including project review and lessons learned.



  • General

    • Traveling as needed for project support.

    • Continually seeking work to maintain project utilization (billable hours)

    • Utilizing current design practices for material handling systems.

    • Adhering to all Fortna and department standards and helping to improve them.

    • Leading, attending and documenting all required meetings.

    • Maintaining good design notes.

    • Attending company training as required.

    • Responding to and following up communications in a timely manner.

    • Being available, approachable, and reliable.

    • Continuously working to solve Client needs.

    • Constantly working to expand knowledge of industry best practices and latest technology.

    • Supporting generation and enhancement of department standard documentation and procedures to improve the quality and efficiency of the Engineering Group.

    • Supporting development of lessons learned document.

    • Maintaining and tracking project budgets, providing PM and management team with insight to past and visibility of possible budget variances.






REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering from an accredited college with 7 years of relevant experience, or Associate degree in Engineering with 10 years of relevant experience, or high school diploma with 15 years of relevant experience.

  • Proficiency in the use of AutoCAD with at least 3 years practical experience.

  • Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office products, particularly Word and Excel.

  • Experience in meeting and design session leadership and facilitation.

  • Ability to present in front of a large group including all stakeholders.

  • Experience in standard design of relevant material handling equipment and general operational knowledge of distribution centers with a focus on automation design.

  • Knowledge of and ability to work with and manage multiple suppliers.

  • Ability to manage schedules and budgets for projects.

  • Ability to self-motivate and work remotely.

  • Willingness to expand knowledge of industry best practices and latest innovations in the industry.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Strong leadership and collaboration skills.

  • Ability to with others including remote resources in multiple time zones using conference calls, webcasts, webinars, video conferencing, or other forms of digital communication.

  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, time management and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to travel domestically (10-20%) and internationally (possess active passport).

  • Ability to perform essential functions of the job.




DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:


  • Consulting, operations and/or distribution experience in supply chain logistics.

  • Experience in material handling equipment.

  • AutoCAD 3D and knowledge of DCconceptor/DCdesigner.

  • Project management training or experience.



The base salary range for this role is $55,800 to $83,700. This base salary range represents the low and high end of the base salary range for this position. Actual base salary offered will vary based on various factors including but not limited to location, level, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and performance.
