Schedule Information:

This position teaches a standard load of 15 contact hours per semester (30 credits per academic year). This may include release time to be given for chair/coordinator duties. Classes may be offered in day, evening, flex learning and/or online modalities. Instructors are also expected to hold 10 office hours per week for student support.

Weeks per fiscal year: Faculty are covered under a 9-month contract period (August thru May)

Position Description and Duties:

Harper College invites applications for a tenure-track full time faculty position. Faculty in this position will teach classes in our Fire Science Technology and Emergency and Disaster Management programs. Develops and designs curriculum plans to foster student learning, promote classroom discussions and ensure student engagement. Additionally, focusing on the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion in our student's educational experience. Other departmental responsibilities include, but are not limited to, developing course syllabi, assisting in curricula development, promoting programs to district high schools and community events, chairing departmental advisory committees, advising, outreach and recruitment. Candidates should possess expertise in fire science and emergency management.

Responsibilities of the position:

• Teach classes in Fire Science Technology that meet the Illinois Office of State Fire Marshal requirements for Company Fire Officer and Advanced Fire Officer certifications.
• Develop innovative curricula that provides students with relevant skills and knowledge that align with industry needs.
• Review and revise course materials and class offerings. Assess student learning and assign grades.
• Attend faculty meetings as required.
• Participate in college governance and other aspects of academic life.
• Maintain current knowledge of subject matter.
• Adhere to current compliance trainings as mandated by the college, including compliance under Title IX "Responsible Employee" and, if applicable, Clery Act Campus Security Authority.
• Select, prepare and maintain current curriculum, course outlines and printed and non-printed instructional materials.
• Teaches assigned classes as scheduled during the required scheduled times and places each academic semester.
• Demonstrates incorporation of active and applied learning in courses taught (hands-on and engagement activities).Provide instructional support to students. Refer students, when appropriate, to additional resources within the College.
• Prepare, update and distribute course syllabi each semester.
• Observe and evaluate student performance in meeting course objectives and learning outcomes through assignments, projects, discussions and/or examinations. Provide feedback on student progress in a timely manner.
• Deliver course content using a variety of teaching styles.
• Maintain office/discipline/grade/division records as required by the College.
• Maintains and posts current teaching schedule and office hours. Be available for student consultation in person, via phone or email.
• Use the appropriate College policies and procedures to document and resolve student complaints, concerns and problems.
• Administer other instruments designed to measure student learning outcomes as requested and required by the department. Provide all results as requested.
• Conduct all classes in accordance with an established and current course syllabus and approved textbooks (and/or related instructional material). Meet all classes for the scheduled time.
• Submit all grades (midterm and final) electronically on or before the required deadlines.
• Encourage students to submit course evaluations, review course evaluations when available and use feedback to improve course delivery.
• Revise and update course content as needed.
• Participate, when appropriate, in the formation and meetings of program advisory committees, college, division, and department committees.
• Infuse technology into pedagogical approaches to teaching.
• Maintain a high level of professional ethics.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Dean.

Departmental Duties:

• Develop curricula and program syllabi for the department
• Conducts program reviews
• Assist in the selection of software, equipment and instructional materials
• Work with advisors, staff, parents, and students to develop recruitment plan and monitor enrollment
• Collaborate with campus partners to promote program and assist with recruiting prospective students
• Assist in the development of print and digital marketing materials
• Accurately maintain institutional, state, and federal records
• Maintain a positive, working relationship with community and industry partners
• Meets with students, staff members, and other educators to discuss instructional programs
• Work diligently to maximize student placements in this field or related fields
• Maintains good communication with Dean, Program Coordinator colleagues, industry partners and students
• Develop opportunities for student internships
• Sponsor an approved student leadership organization and/or promote student participation in competitive events
• Deliver learner-centered instruction at a variety of times and locations in response to institutional needs and meet student data reporting deadlines

Educational Requirements:

AAS in fire science technology or related field. Minimum 5 years of Fire Service experience. OSFM Fire Officer I certification. Minimum 3 years of teaching or training experience at college level.

Experience Requirements:

OSFM Fire Officer Il certification. Ten or more years of experience as a fire department officer and certification by the Office of Illinois State Fire Marshall, Division of Personnel Standards and education at the Advanced Firefighter, Company Fire Officer, NIMS compliant and Instructor ll level; and other specialty certifications required for providing firefighter training.

Preferred Requirements:

A bachelor's in Fire Science Technology, Emergency Management or related field. Minimum 10 years Fire Service experience. OSFM Fire Officer II certification. Minimum 7 years of teaching or training experience at college level.
