SUMMARY

The RK Hall Intern will work under the supervision of experienced employees at various company locations to gain a wide range of knowledge and experience within the construction industry. The RK Hall Intern will work closely with the quality control labs, asphalt plants, paving, ready mix plants, and rock quarry teams to learn industry standard practices and gain hands-on experience in many different disciplines of RK Hall's business.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities at the QC Lab


  • Learn how to read and interpret contract requirements for asphalt mix design
  • Safely collects samples and performs tests on material to ensure that all contract specifications are met

  • Assist with testing and analysis of asphalt mixes using established laboratory procedures and protocols
  • Record, compile and analyze test results using computer software and spreadsheets
  • Participate in quality control and assurance activities to ensure compliance with standards and specifications
  • Assist in maintaining and calibrating laboratory equipment

Essential Duties and Responsibilities on the Asphalt Paving Crew


  • Assist in the preparation of work sites prior to asphalt paving, such as cleaning, grading, and compacting the surface.
  • Help with the setup of paving equipment and materials, including the placement of asphalt mix and the operation of machinery.
  • Learn how to safely operate and maintain various paving tools and equipment, including rollers, pavers, and compactors.
  • Follow instructions from the crew leader to ensure the quality and accuracy of the work performed.
  • Help with the cleanup and maintenance of the work site after completion of the paving job.
  • Observe and learn safe work practices, including the proper use of personal protective equipment and adherence to safety regulations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities at the Asphalt Plant


  • Assist in the production of asphalt, including mixing and heating materials, monitoring temperature and quality, and adjusting machinery as needed.
  • Learn how to safely operate and maintain various plant equipment, including conveyor systems, pumps, and asphalt storage tanks.
  • Help with the inspection and maintenance of plant machinery and equipment, identifying and reporting any issues to the supervisor.
  • Participate in quality control procedures, such as sampling and testing of raw materials and finished products, and recording and analyzing data.
  • Learn about environmental and safety regulations related to asphalt production and assist with compliance.
  • Observe and learn safe work practices, including the proper use of personal protective equipment and adherence to safety regulations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities at the Ready Mix Plant


  • Assist in the production of ready mix concrete, including measuring and mixing materials, monitoring consistency and quality, and adjusting machinery as needed.
  • Learn how to safely operate and maintain various plant equipment, including batching systems, mixers, and conveyor systems.
  • Help with the inspection and maintenance of plant machinery and equipment, identifying and reporting any issues to the supervisor.
  • Participate in quality control procedures, such as sampling and testing of raw materials and finished products, and recording and analyzing data.
  • Learn about environmental and safety regulations related to concrete production and assist with compliance.
  • Observe and learn safe work practices, including the proper use of personal protective equipment and adherence to safety regulations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities at the Rock Quarry


  • Assist in the operation of quarry machinery, such as drills, excavators, and loaders, to extract rock and other materials from the quarry face.
  • Learn how to safely operate and maintain various quarry equipment, including crushing and screening machines, conveyors, and trucks.
  • Help with the inspection and maintenance of quarry machinery and equipment, identifying and reporting any issues to the supervisor.
  • Participate in quality control procedures, such as sampling and testing of raw materials and finished products, and recording and analyzing data.
  • Learn about environmental and safety regulations related to quarry operations and assist with compliance.
  • Observe and learn safe work practices, including the proper use of personal protective equipment and adherence to safety regulations.

Personal Protective Equipment

Individuals wear personal protective equipment in designated operations and production areas as required by OSHA and/or MSHA and company policy. Protective equipment that may be required for this position includes, but is not limited to: Hard Hat, Safety Glasses, High Visibility Safety Apparel, Fall Protection PPE, Gloves, Hearing Protection, Padlocks for Lockout/Tagout, Respiratory Protection, Safety (hard toe) boots, occasional use of Heat Resistant Apparel.

Education and/or Experience

  • Currently pursuing a degree in chemistry, materials science, civil engineering, or a related field
  • Basic understanding of laboratory safety practices and protocols

Language Skills

  • Ability to read and comprehend complex instructions and utilize independent reasoning and use good English.

Mathematical Skills

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals

Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out complex instructions.
  • Ability to deal with standardized situations with occasional variables.
  • Ability to discern when other parties need to be involved in validating priorities.
