What You Will Contribute:
The Advanced Manufacturing Engineer II will focus on developing a pipeline of innovative process improvements and will work with the New Product Development (NPD), Advanced Development (AD) and Sustaining teams to identify opportunities to implement these processes where applicable. Processes include hermetically sealing methods, joining similar and dissimilar materials, dispensing, laser marking, leak testing, accuracy testing, assembly, etc. This position will be mentored by a more senior level engineer, but will be responsible for owning projects, following the established processes, completing deliverables on time, and communicating status and roadblocks with stakeholders. While this role is focused on research and development, the ideal candidate would be comfortable with the standard NPD process and be willing to step in on NPD projects as needed. This position will be required to work cross-functionally and the candidate will need to be comfortable communicating with all levels of the organization.
Essential Duties:
Responsible for researching, experimenting with, and implementing manufacturing technology upgrades and ensuring standardization, documentation, and improvement of those processes across the organization.
Identify and implement advanced process projects, working with ops, design, and other functions, as appropriate
Identify and lead Design for Automated Assembly and Design for Manufacturability and Assembly efforts on proposed concepts
Apply scientific principles and practices to evaluate alternative processes
Work with external integrators to implement automation solutions
Contribute as manufacturing lead on New Product Development teams (as a back-up)
Research and integrate safe, reliable, and cost-effective equipment and processes that assure products are produced at established safety, quality, delivery, and cost objectives
Learn and apply basics of project management for manufacturing-based projects so that projects meet cost and timing objectives
Learn and apply established Lean Six Sigma tools that are used across the organization (SPC/Control Charts, DOE, FMEA, Gage R&R, MSA, hypothesis testing, etc.); identify when specific tools would be helpful and use them independently
Become familiar with the Badger Meter safety policies and apply this knowledge to all projects and equipment
Use established NPD process and Manufacturing Engineering deliverables to ensure the plant is sufficiently prepared to accept the new product
Must be willing to travel up to 10% of the year to Mexico or vendor sites in the US (typically, 3-4 trips to Badger Meter's Mexico Manufacturing site).
Education and Experience :
Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field
3+ years of related experience
Certification in or ability to obtain certification in Continuous Improvement required
Lean Six Sigma Blackbelt preferred
Qualifications:
Familiar with robotic assemblies and control systems to implement automated processes where applicable required
Must be willing to work 30% of the time on the Manufacturing Floor or in the lab, and 70% of the time at the desk
Advanced understanding of Lean Manufacturing methodologies required
Strong presentation, collaboration, and documentation skills required
Understanding of Industry standard New Product Development process required
