Job Description:

This position will be responsible for coordinating collaborative projects to expand and sustain suicide prevention efforts across the state. The Suicide Prevention Training Specialist will work as a team member and subject matter expert for the Center of Excellence for Behavioral Health (CEBH) housed within the Center for Disabilities and Development (CDD). Responsibilities include facilitating suicide prevention trainings; coordinating training initiatives; providing technical assistance; developing supplemental training materials; and conducting process improvement and evaluate instructional functions. This is a specified term position through 9/30/2024 with strong likelihood of renewed funding.



This position is eligible for a combination of remote work and in-person (hybrid) work within Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location.

  • Assist Lead Youth Suicide Prevention Agencies (LYSPAs) in identifying their ongoing training needs regarding developing and sustaining suicide prevention practices.
  • Assist in the development of on-demand training courses that align with suicide prevention best practices.
  • Meet with agency leaders to discuss progress on practice implementation and help solve problems.
  • Conduct research and policy analysis to best inform suicide prevention practices align with the most up-to-date information and best practices.
  • Provide in-person trainings statewide for LivingWorks ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training).
  • Provide in person and/or virtual trainings statewide for CALM (Counseling on Access to Lethal Means).
  • Assist in providing additional suicide prevention trainings as necessary.
  • Coach LYSPA coordinators in leading and supporting local suicide prevention efforts and activities.
  • Serve as a liaison for CEBH with project partners and stakeholders and promote collaborative working relationships.
  • Provide technical assistance to LYSPAs and additional suicide prevention agencies across the state.
  • Maintain a catalog of on-demand courses relevant to suicide prevention practices and activities.
  • Conduct practice evaluation and quality improvement processes.
  • Manage data collection, management, and analyses processes.
  • May provide functional supervision to staff as necessary.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a human services field (social services, education, health field, psychology, public health or related human services field), or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • Current LivingWorks ASIST Trained Trainer or ability to complete training within 6 months of hire.
  • Current CALM Trained Trainer or ability to complete training within 6 months of hire.
  • At least one year of experience facilitating large group trainings.
  • Experience that demonstrates knowledge of suicide prevention activities and comfort discussing the topic. This includes knowledge that demonstrates current best practice of assisting others in recognizing the signs of suicide, providing intervention, developing safety plans, and connecting to further support.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, including experience or capacity to demonstrate positive interpersonal skills and lead work teams.
  • Excellent written communication skills and experience writing technical documents.
  • Strong organizational skills including the ability to manage multiple projects and adhere to deadlines.
  • Ability to travel around the state and work a flexible schedule as required and occasionally to regional or national conferences.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working with program evaluation and process improvement functions.
  • Experience developing training curriculum and/or instructional design.
