GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:

Responsible for the operation of the Kirkwood Theatre costume shop, including costume design, student instruction, costume shop management, and inventory and equipment maintenance. Kirkwood Community College produces two productions each year, a fall musical, and spring play. Kirkwood is an active member of the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival and has a strong history of award recognition at the regional and national conferences. This position is 8 credit hours in the fall semester, 7 credit hours in the spring semester, and 3 credit hours during the summer.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:



  • Maintain regular shop hours for 10-12 hours a week during the fall and spring semesters.

  • Summer availability for fall show preparation.

  • Maintain equipment and inventory.

  • Provide costume design for the selected production(s), including renderings, swatches, sketches, and technical drawings, etc.

  • Communicate and collaborate with the directing team to ensure accurate execution of the design.

  • Attend production meetings, tech week rehearsals, and strike.

  • Conduct a design presentation for cast and crew at the start of the production.

  • Shop and budget for each production.

  • Train student members of the costume running crew.

  • Supervision and instruction of students in the execution of the costume design for each show.

  • Perform other related work duties as assigned.

Light to medium work. Position involves exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally; up to 20 pounds frequently (34-66%); and up to 10 pounds constantly (67-100%) to move objects. Physically able to perform routine stooping, bending, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions constantly (67-100%). Occasional (10-33%) kneeling and crawling.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:



  • Bachelor's Degree with 3 year equivalent work experience in costume design

  • Experience instructing or training others in sewing techniques


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS,
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS
:



  • Experience in an education setting is preferred

  • MFA in Theatre or Design
