Job Description
A full time research assistant (1.0 FTE) position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Herson, Professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery. The research of the laboratory investigates the mechanisms of neuronal injury and repair following cerebral ischemia. This research assistant position will provide support for ongoing research. The applicant will be responsible for on-boarding and developmental training of new staff with the utilization of performing small animal surgery on a daily basis, performing experimental stroke and CA/CPR studies for independent projects as well as producing experimental animals for ongoing research. The position will be responsible for design, execution and management of research project as well as assist in the preparation of research manuscript and preparation of presentations at national and international conference/workshops. Specific ongoing projects the applicant will participate in include the effects of age and gender on brain injury following experimental stroke and the role of novel therapeutic interventions to enhance functional recovery. The candidate should have a Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Neuroscience or related field and experience with animal handling and surgeries is desirable, but not essential. The position will work in a collaborative team environment, while being expected to be a self-motivated investigator who can manage their time efficiently. The position will assume some management roles within the laboratory, in particular management of mouse colony, ordering and oversight of undergraduate researchers.
