GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:



Under the clinical direction of the Gastroenterology Nurse Manager and in accordance with the rules and regulations of Massachusetts governing Nursing practice. The Per Diem Gastroenterology triage nurse will be responsible for the care of patients within the GI Clinic when coverage of Full-time staff is needed to ensure the seamless care of our patient population. We are looking for an RN who has experience within a Gastroenterology outpatient clinic and who is familiar with working in a tertiary/academic hospital setting. This role demands quick decision-making skills, strong clinical judgment, and the ability to manage a high volume of patient inquiries. The ideal candidate will be versatile and willing to function in a variety of roles. This position is per diem, requiring flexibility in scheduling based on the needs of the Practice.



RESPONSIBILITIES



  • Receive and manage incoming calls, in-basket messages, and patient gateways from patients seeking advice, guidance, or assistance related to gastroenterological symptoms, medications, or post-procedure concerns.

  • Triage patient concerns via telephone, patient gateway and in the clinic.

  • Assess patients' symptoms, gather relevant information, and provide appropriate recommendations or instructions following established protocols and guidelines.

  • Effectively and in a timely manner documents nursing phone and chart review assessment, in the electronic medical record as appropriate.

  • Relays clinical issues to the appropriate physician in accordance with established algorithms and clinical protocols.

  • Responds to patients to communicate and explain any recommendations made by providers.

  • Responsible for educating patients regarding medical management of their diseases including medication options, effects, side effects, and therapeutic responses to medications.

  • Provides self-injection education sessions for patients both in person and virtually.

  • Performs in clinic injections/ vaccinations as needed.

  • Assist Providers in coordinating patient care, including facilitating prior authorizations, establishing care with local facilities, and communicating with community providers.

  • Coordinates appropriate scheduling of testing and follow-up assessments.

  • Works to ensure prescriptions are refilled in a timely fashion; lab results are reviewed, and results disseminated to patients.

  • Ensures that referrals to other specialists, radiological, endoscopic and laboratory testing are coordinated with patients and office staff.

  • Assists with letters of medical necessity for prior authorizations, disability forms, and FMLA forms.

  • Act as a resource regarding complex medications for patients and their families, including information regarding co-pay assistance programs, grants, and available community resources.






Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:



  • Valid Massachusetts RN licensure required.

  • Experience working as a GI triage nurse in an Ambulatory setting required.

  • Experience working with Epic required.

  • Experience working in a tertiary/academic medical center preferred.

  • Excellent communication skills when working with peers and patients.

  • Experience with Microsoft Outlook, Office, Excel, and Teams

  • Utilizes good judgment in the resolution of clinical and non-clinical problems.

  • Exceptional computer skills

  • Personnel Management: Ability to coordinate among diverse constituents.

  • Discretion and Confidentiality: Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters discreetly and to ensure confidentiality guidelines are maintained by staff.

  • Safety/Compliance: Knowledge in aspects of safety applicable to position; Knowledge of and compliance with institutional, JCAHO, HIPAA, and other regulatory bodies' standards.

  • Time Management: Exceptional organizational skills and ability to organize time and priorities effectively, asking for direction when appropriate. Flexibility to handle multiple tasks and deadline pressures.

  • Skills to work efficiently and effectively and strive to do so in all aspects of position

  • Ability to manage resources effectively and to ensure accurate and compliant billing processes.


EDUCATION:



  • Bachelor's degree required.


This role is a hybrid nursing role, which will primarily be remote but may require 2 days on site per week based on nursing coverage. Hours would vary depending on coverage needs. Primary work hours will be during clinic hours of 8:00am to 4:30pm.
