Role

The Commercial Lending Director at Capitol Federal is responsible for the delivery of a wide range of financial solutions to commercial banking customers while working with treasury management and commercial lenders to execute on the company's and customer's business objectives. The primary responsibilities will require extensive knowledge in credit underwriting, due diligence, loan structuring and documentation, and portfolio monitoring. The Commercial Lending Director teams provide thorough, objective analysis of the financial condition and credit worthiness of borrowers, including prevailing covered industry sector and product/market conditions, as well as the appropriate credit structure based on various risk considerations. The role requires extensive knowledge of the unique sector/product drivers and key performance indicators to make well-informed credit underwriting decisions and proactively manage the portfolio based on a dynamic environment. The Commercial Lending Director requires extensive understanding of various Capitol Federal specific credit policies, processes, and procedures, and how to apply these concepts consistently in practice, including ensuring the portfolio is appropriately risk rated and classified, properly secured (if applicable) and that early warning signs are established and proactively addressed. The Commercial Lending Director represents Capitol Federal in all they do in the community and is focused on the development of new business relationships.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities


  • Facilitates the end-to-end lending process for the assigned business relationships and portfolio.

  • Responsible for approving and managing a material amount of credit risk associated with capital deployed across a variety of lending products appropriate for commercial banking relationships.

  • Provides structuring input on financing options, driving internal analytical work product and discussions on credit approvals, and maintains ongoing credit oversight of the lending portfolio relationships through periodic reviews along with covenant, concentrations and other reporting monitoring, as applicable.

  • Knowledgeable of assigned portfolio and industry, and able to articulate and support a credit view based on a well-supported analysis that effectively balances risk and business objectives.

  • Ensures appropriate regulatory classification and minimizing net credit losses for covered portfolio, as well as identify emerging areas of concerns that should be escalated.

  • Provides sector and sub-segment insights for key internal and external stakeholders, contributes to industry-specific risk and portfolio content, including industry-level portfolio reviews, and leads the credit-specific risk assessments on new originations and portfolio requests.

  • Leads the timely analysis and preparation of periodic reviews of existing borrowers to track compliance with loan covenants, raising potential concerns and taking necessary actions in partnership with other key stakeholders for the assigned portfolio.

  • Conducts periodic client calls on portfolio clients and select new to bank opportunities in partnership with Treasury Management.

  • Develops and maintain an extensive knowledge in the various credit products and services offered by Capitol Federal, including commercial real estate, commercial and industrial (C&I) loans, SBA loans, participation loans and others.

  • Mentors and develop junior staff to become effective resources and future Commercial Lenders and Bankers.

  • Recommends changes to improve existing processes to achieve greater efficiency and controls.

  • Works proactively, and in a constructive and diplomatic manner, with internal and external stakeholders to keep transactions moving forward and in accordance with appropriate controls.

  • Meets with Regulators to discuss credit policy and credits on an annual basis.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Must comply with current applicable laws, regulations and bank policies and procedures. Comply with all safety policies, practices and procedures. Report all unsafe activities to supervisor and/or Human Resources

Knowledge & Skills
• Eight years of similar or related experience with specific commercial lending expertise including credit underwriting, and portfolio and/or risk management in commercial lending.
• Experience with early problem recognition and resolution skills with a strong credit sense and ability to articulate a view on a potential contingency plan.
• Experienced team leader and lender with a deep and relevant knowledge of commercial lending.
• Experience and track record of managing and developing people and teams for successful outcomes and permeation through company ranks.

Education/Certifications/Licenses
Bachelor's Degree; advanced degree(s) and other certifications considered but not required.

Physical Requirements
Perform primarily sedentary work with limited physical exertion and occasional lifting of up to 20 lbs. Must be capable of climbing / descending stairs in emergency situation. Must be able to operate routine office equipment including telephone, copier, facsimile, and calculator. Must be able to routinely perform work on computer for an average of 6-8 hours per day, when necessary. Must be able to work extended hours whenever required or requested by management. Must be capable of travel by automobile (as driver and passenger), commercial airlines, rental vehicles and public transportation and be able to lodge in public facilities.

Working Conditions
Regular in-office attendance required.

Must be able to effectively handle multiple, simultaneous, and changing priorities. Must be capable of exercising highest level of discretion on both internal and external confidential matters.
