Sr. Analytical Chemist

Job Summary:

Sr. Analytical Chemists provide scientific knowledge and support to the company. They have extensive scientific knowledge in the area of Chemistry and analytical instrumentation techniques. The position involves management of high level chemistry projects as needed by the business. They write and help validate new protocols, perform method development, and validate analytical instrumentation. They participate on standard writing committees and bring the technical information from committee meetings, seminars, and technical training from industry experts back to the company. They serve as a master trainer in the company and are a resource for cross sectional problem solving. They consult with clients on technical issues.

Essential Duties:

Serve as a science specialist


  • Create protocols and work instructions
  • Explore new scientific methods, technologies, and method developments
  • Development and validation of new analytical methods
  • Troubleshoots problems with existing methods, procedures, instrument hardware and software. Identify the best course of action to remedy problems.
  • Evaluates test results for suitability and designates acceptability

Consult with clients on technical matters

  • Host client visits and audits
  • Assist in client consultation

Provide company support

  • Work with sales on complex quotes and project estimates
  • Perform role as study director on new methods or complex studies when needed
  • Technical project management as assigned
  • Review regulatory standards and ensure compliance of the laboratory procedures

Serve as a chemistry SME and training specialist for the company.

  • Continually learn and train, review scientific literature, and attend meetings to keep current with new technical information
  • Participate on standards committees
  • Perform training for new employees
  • Reinforce general training

Quality responsibilities

  • Know and follow ISO 17025 and ISO 9001 guidelines
  • Reviews general data quality to determine where changes to methods or procedures could improve quality and throughput

Additional Job Functions

  • Coordinate communication between clients and laboratory staff
  • Assist with failure investigations for the laboratory
  • Assist with company technical issues

Other duties as assigned

Travel - Occasional travel during the business day, although, some out-of-the area and overnight travel may be expected.

  • Know and follow applicable regulatory requirements (GMP, GLP, ISO, etc.).
  • Know and follow company policies and procedures.
  • Complete required training on time.

Work Environment:

This job operates in a professional laboratory environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment and lab equipment including but not limited to, computers, keyboards, computer mouse, telephones, photocopiers, file cabinets, microscopes, micropipettes, pipette aids, various hand tools and analytical equipment.

Possibility exists for exposure to biological and chemical hazards, exposure to carcinogenic compounds and other environmental aspects which may be considered unfavorable. Employees are expected to follow Biosafety and Chemical Hygiene policies, practices and procedures.

Physical requirements:

The physical demands described here are a representative of those that must be met to perform the essential job functions.


  • Required to sit 30% of the day, stand and traverse 70% of the day to various office and lab locations and 50-60% of the day working at a computer.
  • Bending, stooping, crouching, crawling and climbing.
  • Ability to have full body movement required.
  • Occasional push and pull tasks with one or both hands.
  • Must be able to work while wearing personal protective equipment such as safety glasses, goggles, face shields, gloves, lab coats and personal protective equipment deemed necessary to protect testing and to protect employees from various solutions, wastes, etc.
  • Must be able to lift and/or move up to 45 pounds.

Education and experience requirements:

M.S degree (Chemistry or biological science strongly preferred) and 5-10 years applicable mass spectrometry experience.

Or

B.S. degree (Chemistry or biological science strongly preferred) and 10 years applicable mass spectrometry experience.
