About the Opportunity



This is an open position with FirstEnergy Service Co., a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. [FEU]

The selected candidate may be offered a position within the same job family, at a level that is lower than what was posted. This will be determined based upon the results of the interview process which considers the candidate's skills, work history, experience level, and other relevant qualifications.

This position reports to the Manager, Commercial and Industrial Programs.

This position will be classified as Mobile with primary work location as home, but may work at or visit a facility, based on business need.

The Commercial and Industrial (C&I) Program Engineer will have responsibility for implementation, operations and support of C&I Energy Efficiency programs in any of FirstEnergy's operating companies to meet regulatory requirements.

This position will require building appropriate relationships internally and externally to support the program marketing and implementation strategies to drive progress toward long-term Energy Efficiency goals. The position will also provide support in assisting program design, technical support through analytics, development of energy evaluation tools, project management support, database management support and the development of defined program implementation strategies and Energy Efficiency plans.


Responsibilities include:


• Support and management of the implementation process of C&I Energy Efficiency programs to achieve legislated energy and peak demand reduction targets in one or more of FirstEnergy's Electrical Distribution Companies (EDC) located in NJ, PA, MD, WV and OH; implementation process includes managing program budgets, adhering to regulatory requirements and creating positive customer experiences.

• Interfacing with customers to address/answer questions relating to C&I Energy Efficiency program eligibility requirements, application of energy efficiency technologies and provide application assistance.

• Presentations of Energy Efficiency Programs for purposes of educational and training.

• Participate on cross functional working groups in the development of: C&I energy efficiency plans, development of Request for Proposal (RFP), selection of implementation vendors.

• Ensuring accurate reporting of C&I energy efficiency program performance, budgetary and energy efficiency and peak demand reduction achievements as related to legislated targets, preparing reports and summaries.

• Monitor and manage assigned program performance through engagement with assigned implementation vendor(s) leadership and operations team; striving to meet contractual target(s) and staying with assigned budget(s).

• Assist with developing program energy saving protocols for energy saving technologies or customer specific energy efficiency projects. May include conducting energy efficiency research; compiling and analyzing moderately complex data; solving practical problems.

• Ability to analyze new energy efficiency technologies for potential adoption in C&I energy efficiency programs.

• Assist with developing tools and methods for managing large datasets using Excel and/or Visual Basic for Applications.

• Ability to proactively initiate value-added analyses to quickly identify and resolve issues and contribute to improving overall implementation of programs.

• Documenting program implementation processes and protocols.

• Conducting energy efficiency research.

• Development of program manuals for Energy Efficiency C&I Programs

• Providing staff assistance to peers, management and higher-level professionals, as needed.

• Exercise sound decision making by developing alternatives, and recommendations, to current work processes to drive continuous process improvement.

• Actively seek formal and informal learning opportunities to better understand departmental procedures, trends in energy efficiency technology and industry standards.

• Participate in working group activities with regulatory bodies, state agencies or other utilities.

• Build relationships and credibility across organization.

• Demonstrating sufficient maturity to exercise independent judgment on moderately complex projects and assignments.

• Attend and participate in Customer/Program Alley educational, promotional and outreach events.

• Demonstrate a solid commitment to all aspects of safety


Qualifications include:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution is required.
    • Electronic(s) Engineering Technology degree requires a PE license to meet position requirements.

  • Minimum of three (3) years' engineering experience is required.
    • Relevant work experience will include application engineering support and/or energy related technical/analytical experience, mechanical system experience is a plus.

  • Licensure as a Professional Engineer (PE) considered a plus.
  • Successful completion of the FE exam considered a plus.
  • Knowledge of energy efficiency programs, products and technologies, customer electricity usage patterns, rate structures, and state regulatory policies a plus.
  • Self-motivated, self-starter, customer focused, and results oriented.
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis, data analytics, sampling approaches and data collection methods and standards.
  • Demonstrated abilities of effective analytical and reasoning, refined oral and written communication skills, including ability to effectively structure and confidently present information to peers and leadership.
  • Ability to develop visualizations and dashboards to identify energy efficiency opportunities and track C&I energy efficiency program performance.
  • Experience working in a team environment both as a leader and/or as active team member; ability to adeptly manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • Ability to work on multiple assignments, prioritize assignments and deliver quality, accurate deliverables within established deadlines. Must be capable of driving projects and tasks to completion.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Demonstrate a questioning attitude towards continuing to learn, producing results, and strengthening existing relationships.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to express thoughts and ideas clearly and concisely.
  • Positive, patient and friendly attitude.
