Job Description:

JOB BRIEF
The General Merchandise Manager in each store is responsible for the overall operation of the General Merchandise department. In that capacity, the General Merchandise Manager must supervise the employees of the General Merchandise department to ensure that staff is well-trained and productive. Additional responsibilities include continuously evaluating the department to maximize its contribution to the store's overall success and company standards.


JOB DUTIES
- Review the condition of the department throughout the day ensuring that employees are dressed according to dress code or are utilizing all required personal protective equipment (e.g. weight belts); practicing learned customer service skills; that department condition meets company standards and is being maintained at all times.
- Observe department areas for evidence of shrink, including spoilage, damage, poor inventory control, and theft; inform and coach employees as to procedures to reduce shrink; ensure that proper security measures are in place; consult with loss prevention and store manager as needed to decrease shrinkage in the department. Keep the Store Manager and/or key staff members informed of any unusual or unauthorized activity in and around the store.
- Assign responsibility for ordering supplies and monitor to ensure proper levels and proper control; facilitate product transfers between departments or between stores from time to time. Review invoices of product received into the general merchandise department and ensure proper receipt procedures were followed and proper accounting, matching invoices against Purchase Log and making necessary corrections; following established procedure for submitting invoices for timely payment.
- Review advertised sale items each week and follow-up on work of scan coordinator to ensure that advertised prices are correct in store's pricing system and on the shelf tags. Execute the quarterly department action plans as well as any additional plans received from Merchandising and ensure that actions and results are well-documented. Authorize and implement progressive markdowns to liquidate outdated and obsolete (but saleable) merchandise. Assess inventory needs based on movement, specials, promotions, and trends; determine amount of supplies and stock needed to meet needs; ensure that orders are placed to avoid out-of-stocks; in the event of out-of-stocks, direct the use of available resources to fill immediate needs without resorting to special orders.
- Develop and implement additional action plans or promotional events that will maximize sales and ensure that merchandising goals are achieved. Prepare and implement department plans for effective space management, product allocation, and cross merchandising. Ensure that product is properly rotated by general merchandise department employees, and that expired products are pulled from display. Responsible for department's readiness for inventory each quarter; direct and assign necessary duties to prepare for inventory.
- Prepare employee schedules each week based on projected sales, labor budget, and anticipated activity; monitor labor budget daily and adjust schedule as needed. Review and analyze previous day's sales; compare with budget and sales; identify and record events that may have affected sales.
- Interview candidates for general merchandise department positions and assess candidates against job requirements; recommend candidates for hire; ensure that each new employee completes orientation; perform on the job training to ensure expectations are met, coach and train so that work is performed safely and efficiently; ensure each employee who operates equipment maintains a current and valid license or certification; communicate the importance of practicing safety every day; monitor employees continuously to ensure that employees are making safety an important part of their work.
- Conduct, or direct and monitor, job training for new employees; communicate productivity and performance levels expected of each employee, and monitor work of each employee to ensure that expectations are met; coach and train so that work is performed safely and efficiently and in a way that will ensure the general merchandise department is well-stocked, clean, and pleasing to customers.
- Make work assignments for employees and follow-up to ensure completion. Ensure that efficiency procedures are being followed consistently; review employees' checklists from previous day; validate checklists against actual department conditions; discuss any deficiencies discovered and counsel employees if necessary following company guidelines for disciplinary action.
- Enforce company policies and procedures in the general merchandise department, including policies related to security and safety, company dress and grooming standards, and health standards. Ensure that all policies and procedures designed to protect the company's assets are followed at all times; communicate policies and expectations to employees; observe employee actions for compliance; take action as necessary to correct behavior.
- Observe employees' interactions with customers and ensure that they give proper attention to customers. Also monitor customer interactions on the phone ensuring that employees practice proper etiquette when answering the phone, attending to customers on the phone, and paging throughout the store.
- Communicate with employees in the general merchandise department on a regular basis to relay department or company news, remind them about certain company policies, discuss shrink in the department, and discuss other topics that will enhance their performance and ensure compliance with all policies.
- Investigate any personnel situations or policy violations that may have an adverse effect on department operating performance or any situations that may require disciplinary action; dispense and/or make recommendations as to appropriate disciplinary action according to company policy; consult with Store Manager when appropriate.
- Evaluate performance of staff periodically (by means of observation and feedback from other managers and customers) to recommend personnel actions such as retention, promotion, pay increase, transfer, reward or dismissal of employees.
- Work to develop and maintain a friendly atmosphere and good morale in the department by giving feedback and recognition to employees on a regular basis; by resolving disputes and/or issues between employees; and by addressing employees' questions and concerns.
- Support and model safety in the store; set and communicate expectations with regard to working safely; continuously observe employee and management practices to ensure safety is an important part of every employees' work; recognize and reward employees who consistently work safely.
- Review and approve all hiring decisions; follow up to ensure all new employees receive proper training and coaching in the first weeks of employment.

Secondary Job Duties:
- Prevent and solve problems. Resolve customer complaints to the full satisfaction of the customer.
- Minimize department supply expense through proper ordering and efficient usage.
- Notify management of associate theft, customer shoplifting, unauthorized mark downs and/or property defacement.
- Ensure department adheres to company dress code standards, i.e. name tags, personal hygiene, etc.
- Present favourable impression in dress, personal hygiene, and business attitude.
- Other duties assigned by management.

QUALIFICATIONS
- High school education preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must have three years' experience in General Merchandise department operations.
- Strong customer service skills.
