Maintain proper inventory levels to insure 100% in stock levels while maximizing turns for assigned vendors and take corrective action when necessary.
Insure best value (prices) for assigned products.
Negotiate purchase and sales deals and/or take maximum advantage of manufacturer deals and promotions.
Insure timely delivery of products and maximize logistics savings. Expedite purchase orders if needed.
Manage decisions on which items to stock and which to discontinue with the cooperation of the sales department. Negotiate marketing programs with assigned vendors to fund company merchandising programs.
Execute supplier meetings/engagement as appropriate. Review performance and lead continuous improvement programs.
Stay up to date on market trends and pricing. Become a subject matter expert on the lines this position is responsible for.
Attend buying group shows. Minor amount of travel required.
Participate in sales meetings by supplying information on products, pricing and POS material.
Provide sales personnel and management with tools to help sell products (pricing, availability, samples, POS materials and promotional materials). This may involve visits to customers with company sales people and direct phone contact with customers.
Constant review of vendors/categories to: maximize margins, maximize turns, eliminate duplication, extend profitable lines, take advantage of best bracket pricing and eliminate obsolete and dead inventory.
Maintain sales loaded pricing on all items purchased utilizing a formula based on current vendor cost, vendor replacement cost, industry benchmarks pricing or commodity cost plus freight. Costing method to be based on company's and category manager's knowledge of current market conditions at the end user level.
Issue purchases orders and verify the pricing is correct once confirmations are received.
Investigate and initiate alternate sourcing as appropriate. Evaluate their supply capabilities and prices.
Assist in other duties/projects as instructed by purchasing management.
Abilities:
Category Manager must have a good working knowledge of Microsoft applications and an ability to quickly learn our business software applications (ERP).
Category Manager needs a working knowledge of general purchasing policies and procedures as well as ethical purchasing practices. Knowledge of logistics is also necessary.
Category Manager must be familiar with the tools used to merchandise selected product categories by utilizing their communication skills, the broker community, company sales personnel and direct contacts with customers.
Category manager must work with Accounts Payable to handle and resolve any invoicing issues and work with the warehouse/transportation to assist in resolving any delivery/inventory issues.
Category manager should be proactive and a have a superior sense of urgency in completing their tasks. They should be detail oriented and insist that their responsibilities are completed in an accurate and timely manner.
Additional Requirements:
Multiple yearss of purchasing experience in food service.
