The Product Design Engineer is responsible for leading the development of new designs from early research to development of proof of concept and ultimate deployment in Production. The role includes the application of design for manufacturing tools to create differentiating products for new and existing market segments.
Essential Responsibilities
Lead the development of innovative new products, features, and enhancements
Gather feedback and ideas from members of all departments involved in the product life cycle to improve the New Product Development (NPD) pipeline
Collaborate with Product Managers, Engineering, and Manufacturing leaders to define Design for Manufacturing (DFM) efforts that support Operations and NPD
Identify areas of opportunity for DFM and standardization through research, observation, and market trends
Work with internal and external resources to develop rapid prototypes, Proof of Concept prototypes, and functional prototypes as needed
Work closely with the Leadership team to provide feedback and input for long-term DFM and standardization strategy and vision
Design standards and best practices to be used by the engineering and manufacturing teams
Education and Experience
Must have:
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or closely related field
Strong mechanical aptitude with hands-on experience
Experience with CAD and ability to create and develop 3D models (Solidworks preferred)
Ability to understand product/process variation, impact on tolerance stack-ups and application to ensure high quality product designs
Good understanding and working knowledge of lean manufacturing systems, techniques, and tools
Nice to have:
Masters level or other advanced technical degree
5+ years of product design experience with an established skillset of new product development, efficiency improvements, and implementing/launching designs and solutions
Experience with applying DFMEA concepts to the product design and manufacturing process
Experience applying Design for Six Sigma product development processes with DoE and other specific problem solving tools
Knowledge of product development processes such as Stage Gate or APQP
Proven ability to effectively lead cross functional teams to solve complex problems
Demonstrated Project Management experience with organizing and managing complex projects simultaneously to meet key deadlines
