Scope of Position

We have an excellent opportunity for an Environmental Manager at our Troutville, VA facility. This exempt position will report directly to the Plant Manager. The primary function of this position will be to lead environmental compliance and promote sustainability at Roanoke Cement Company.

Responsibilities & Expectations:
  • Manage the environmental efforts for the Roanoke Cement facility in compliance activities by assigning responsibilities and ensuring task completion.
  • Interface as the company advocate for environmental issues with regulatory agencies.
  • Investigate and resolve compliance problems, questions, or complaints received from within the company, customers, government regulatory agencies and/or the public
  • Audit environmental monitoring, reporting, and record retention
  • Ensure compliance requirements are met through organizational and procedural measures
  • Train company employees on relevant environmental issues and regulations, including related company policies.
  • Maintain a high level of knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental and land use laws and regulations.
  • Review and analyze current and proposed permits, laws, and regulations, effectively communicate impacts to management and work collaboratively with operations to provide a plan of action.
  • Effectively manage the training and development of skills, knowledge and abilities within the department
  • Develop and implement environmental management plans for respective areas.
  • Assist management in implementing environmental improvement programs to promote increased environmental performance.

Qualifications:
  • B.S. degree in Environmental Engineering or closely related fields is required.
  • 5-7 years in combination of experience in Environmental positions in heavy industrial environment or related experience.
  • Experience and demonstrated ability managing environmental programs.
  • DMME experience and experience managing complex permits highly preferred.

  • Self-starter with high energy and proven record of instituting continuous improvement.
  • Working knowledge of federal, provincial and local regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to form meaningful partnerships with various business leaders.
  • Proficient analytical and strategic planning, organization and time-management abilities. Must be capable of handling numerous projects concurrently.
  • Excellent leadership and management skills; demonstrated ability to develop others.
  • Ability to independently learn and understand technical, regulatory, and external issues regarding the environmental programs at the plant.
  • Ability to positively interact with regulatory agencies to ensure understanding of requirements and obtain achievable compliance requirements for both departments.
  • Ability to independently audit and inspect industrial operations, identifying compliant or non-compliant safety and environmental issues, and effectively communicate those findings to leadership team and lead resolution efforts.
  • Ability to independently develop, lead, and implement effective compliance strategies and management systems.
  • Ability to communicate with internal and external parties in a collaborative, positive manner, representing the Company's interests.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite - Specifically Outlook, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS Excel and MS Visio.
