Job Description:

The Dallas Morning News is looking for an experienced editor to join our local news team striving to produce meaningful stories in the country's ninth-largest city that anchor its fourth-largest metro area.

Our goal is to be the Number one regional news organization in the U.S. Making that happen depends on developing reporters who can regularly produce groundbreaking, community-changing journalism that helps Dallas understand and overcome its challenges, holds our community leaders accountable, and highlights the good work taking place around us.

We value stories with impact, driven by people-focused writing supported by facts, data, and information our readers won't find anywhere else. We want to be the first, best, and most trusted news source in Texas.

Our local news reporting team is diverse and has a range of experience. Some of the memorable stories written include:

  • Exclusive reporting on the lack of air-conditioning in the state's prisons led to follow-up stories like this one about a man who died in prison when temperatures rose above 100 degrees for a record 54 days in 2023.
  • A story about Kenneth Knotts, a man who died in police custody, but his family was never told that officials had ruled their son's death was a homicide.
  • A 30-day project in September in which we covered the impact of the fentanyl epidemic through North Texas.

The Government Accountability Editor will work with a team of reporters, emphasizing the development of reporting and writing skills-from exercising solid news judgment to developing strong sourcing to turning those sources into scoops, insightful enterprise work, and projects with the potential to transform Dallas. We focus on growing our local news staff into the preeminent reporting team in Texas.

The Government Accountability Editor will report to our Assistant Managing Editor for news.
