Job Description:

The Director of Clinical Simulation manages ICOM Simulation Program operations, including oversight of personnel; budget; expenditures; internal/external customer relations and development; and collaboration with all system educational objectives. Responsible for developing curricula and implementation of simulation-based clinical education programs and Standardized Patients, as well as assessing the performance and educational content of these various programs. Works in conjunction with the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs, Medical Director of Simulation, Course Directors, Faculty and Staff to ensure Simulation programs, including Standardized Patients and OSCE events, align with organizational needs and best practices in medical simulation. Responsible for integrating simulation technology into existing health care curricula, and aiding/ designing related research efforts.

  • Manages and directs the implementation of simulation across ICOM, executing the necessary curriculum to meet the educational and clinical simulation needs of the College.
  • Prepares budget and operational business plan for the simulation center. Submits proposed budgets to the CFO for annual budget review.
  • Responsible for interviewing, selecting for employment, and evaluating direct reports.
  • Able to identify those learning needs that can be met with Simulation and designs collaborative action plans and outcome evaluations for Simulation Programs, then designs/suggests educational activities based on assessed needs.
  • Assists Course Directors and Faculty in the design, development, and implementation of simulation curriculum. Ensures that the developed curriculum meets the stated learning objectives of the various courses and programs that are being served
  • Trains, oversees, and schedules standardized patients.
  • Develops, promotes, and supports quality and safety in the simulation curriculum. Ensures that simulation education and research initiatives are consistent with the strategic vision and mission of the college.
  • Implements policies, procedures and practices consistent with the vision and mission. Facilitates integration of simulation into existing healthcare curricula.
  • Develops and oversees Standardized Patient (SP) protocols, applications and tools used for Simulation Center training.
  • Continuously assesses the performance and educational content of the simulation-based programs.
  • Provides training for Faculty and Course Directors in the concepts and skills of simulation education and debriefing. Manages ICOM simulation center staff.
  • Oversees development of instructional materials and web-based learning tools used for Simulation Center training.
  • Maintains proficiency in existing and emerging quality, safety and simulation technologies, including basic theory, design and implementation.
  • Develops schedules and utilizes on-line tools for schedules, training sessions, classes workshops and other activities.
  • Participates in task forces and teams charged with improving specific patient care or safety issues through the use of Simulation.
  • Identifies needed equipment, supplies and potential space to accommodate clinical lab sessions.
  • Monitors the consistency and quality of assessment and examination.
  • Assists in pre-clinical and clinical Curriculum development pertaining to the use of skills manikins and all other simulation devices.
  • Continuously learning and adopting new skills and tools necessary to facilitate quality and safety activities. Acquires and maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the fields of Simulation and Health Education. Maintains proficiency in existing and emerging simulation technologies, including basic theory, design and implementation.
  • Promotes an appropriate climate for creativity, inquiry and diversity.
  • Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patients, students, physicians and employees. Discuss private information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places.
  • Behaves in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values of ICOM.
  • Assumes responsibilities for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to appropriate personnel.
  • Oversees Standardized Patient Program Coordinators, Simulation operations Specialists, and Simulation technicians, and Simulation Coordinators in the operation, programming, repair and maintenance of simulation equipment for simulation sessions and extracurricular events.
  • Oversees simulation technicians in the set-up and disassembly of simulation sessions.
  • Performs other related duties, as assigned
  • Supervises Simulation Operations Specialists, Simulation Coordinators, Standardized Patient Program Coordinators, and Simulation technicians, and all regular classified and temporary hourly staff under his/her direction

Requirements
  • Healthcare systems background with a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in a healthcare or healthcare related field, accompanied by extensive healthcare simulation experience.
  • Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) certified in Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) or equivalent program.
  • Experience in the design and implementation of simulation-based education programs with prior experience in course development and education methodology.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in Simulation and research preferred.
  • Experience with and understanding of key functions of hospital and medical staff departments or services. AHA ACLS, PALS, ITLS/PHTLS, BLS instructor preferred.
