Job Description:

As a S&T Research Chemist, you will support the PPG Silica Pilot Plant to drive new precipitated silica technology scale-up and manufacturing process development. The Chemist will be a member of the PPG Silica R&D team and work closely with colleagues in R&D, Technical Service, and Manufacturing to validate and develop new precipitated silica products toward the goal of full-scale production and commercialization.

Key Responsibilities

• Promote and ensure safe work in the Silica Pilot Plant, including the operation of equipment, handling of chemicals, etc.


• Learn and apply the necessary chemical concepts of precipitated silica technology to accelerate the development and scale-up of new silica products.


• Collaborate with Silica R&D and Technical Service to translate new silica development opportunities and customer needs into pilot-scale manufacturing processes.


• Collaborate with Silica Process Technology to translate pilot-scale silica manufacturing capabilities and processes to Manufacturing, enabling the full-scale commercial production of new silica products.


• Participate in ISO 9001 audits as required by the PPG Silica business and ensure all equipment, processes, and measuring devices under ISO 9001 certification remain compliant.


• Ensure Silica Pilot Plant compliance with PPG Environment, Health, and Safety requirements and housekeeping guidelines, including the handling of raw materials and experimental samples, proactive identification and mitigation of hazards and risks, and compliance with guidelines for waste disposal.


• Support components of R&D projects and Manufacturing initiatives where the development of new precipitated silica manufacturing processes at the pilot scale is required.

• Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or a relevant technical field, such as Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or an Engineering discipline with a background in chemistry.


• 0-3 years of work experience in a chemical laboratory setting.


• Commitment to safe work practices, including following all laboratory procedures and contributing to the maintenance of high safety standards.
