Ashland has an exciting opportunity for an Environmental, Health, Safety and Security Engineer to join our Ashland LLC, Specialty ingredients G.P. business at our Hopewell, VA facility. This is a very visible, significant role within the Company and the EHS function. This position will report to the site EHS Manager.

The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:


  • Functions as an EHS resource for plant personnel, acting under the guidance of EHS Department Management and having visibility on the shopfloor. Primarily owns site safety programs and backs up Environmental programs as needed.

  • Participate in and provide guidance to Plant Behavioral Based Safety Programs.

  • Tracks and audits compliance with Corporate EHS&S procedures and programs.

  • Maintain and apply knowledge of current policies, regulations, and industrial processes including OSHA / ANSI / NFPA.

  • Performs inspections of plant safety, security and environmental procedures and practices

  • Performs Job Safety Analysis and other safety audits of job tasks.

  • Coordinates, updates, and prepares plant EHS procedures, working with multidisciplinary teams of both hourly and salary employees to ensure that procedures comply with the law, meet industry standards, and lead to safer plant operations.

  • Assists with updating and reviewing of facility permits, both internal and external

  • Prepares written reports, summaries, charts and graphs to track and communicate inspection and audit results.

  • Works with the EHS staff and other department representatives to establish and work toward achieving annual departmental and plant goals.

  • Keeps EHS Manager informed on plant EHS issues while staying knowledgeable and current on regulatory issues and industry practices.

  • Leads and participates in incident investigations and formal Root Cause Analysis.

  • Assists in communicating the results of various hazard analysis, incident investigations, etc.

  • Attends and participates in professional and committee meetings related to environmental, health and safety issues.

  • Coordinates and/or leads various EHS related training topics for new and/or current employees.

  • Supports implementation of the Responsible Care Management Systems and associated programs to implement the plan-do-check-act methodology to plant operations.                 

  • Participates in Manage of Change Design and Pre-Startup reviews.

  • Participates in other EHS initiatives that will contribute to compliance of State/Federal regulations and improve existing Company programs.

  • Assigned safety observer for unusual or hazardous project work in plant, e.g., roofing jobs, complex scaffolding jobs.

  • Leadership of emergency response team ensuring daily accountability, maintaining compliance through training certification, and performing drills and tabletop exercises to maintain team readiness.

In order to be qualified for this role, you must possess the following:


  • 3 years industry experience and Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Safety and Health, Engineering, Chemistry or related discipline OR minimum 10 years industry experience and Associate’s degree OR minimum of 20 years’ experience in an EHS position.

  • Experience at a PSM facility required.

  • Experience with Environmental programs required.

  • Candidate must be willing to be trained and gain proficiency in areas for programs they are responsible for (examples include but not limited to asbestos supervisor certification, fall protection competent person, industrial hygiene program management

  • This individual must also be able to interact well with site employees at all levels.

The following skill sets are preferred by the business unit:


  • ASP or CSP certification is preferred if not otherwise required by region or country regulations.

  • Emergency response experience

  • Experience working with regulatory agencies

  • Production and/or maintenance supervisory experience

  • Implementing change in EHS programs
